As in the above message saying ‘hope you die’ is an ‘insult’? Seems a tad extreme.

You are crossing the bounds of a mere insult there, and not in a milder direction.

Really? Okay ... if jokes aren’t allowed I’ll wear my serious hat. Note: I didn’t just say ‘hope you die’ above, the context was CLEARLY a joke in that I don’t wish eternal life on anyone. If that is too much for people to handle I’ll just refrain from chatting unless someone of authority here says otherwise.

I don’t get why humour is so taboo now on forums/online platforms, but I perfectly understand that there are plenty of groups out there trolling around and looking to be insulted or dish out insults.

I was just surprised by the ‘warning’ text from the word noted above. I guess there is a considerable difference between English and US culture in terms of what is regarded as ‘vulgar’ language and ‘swearing’ in general.

Regardless, the automated warning „you are using offense language“ does go too far in many cases, but that‘s what you can expect from an automated filter that goes along a simple list of words. But this notification also doesnt have any consequences, as long as the other players dont report it to the mods.

Okay, thanks. I thought the so-called ‘offensive language’ might have contributed toward a ‘ban’. But if no one reports it then that’s okay (The word wasn’t directed at anyone anyway). I’m damn sure everyone in the game understood my RPG style comments - the hobbit comment was met with a as I expected.

For context, if I was playing a lizard race and you said to me, ‘Stay away you slimy lizards!’ I doubt you’d expect to be reported, and if you were I wouldn’t class it as a reasonable reason to be reported. That is the context.

Also, saying ‘I hope you die’ followed by ‘not NOW. No one wants to live for ever,’ isn’t ‘insulting’ or ‘offensive’. True, maybe it isn’t a great joke but it is CLEARLY a joke.

But, no bans on this site are because of automated activity. They are a result of someone filling out a reporting form, and a moderator looking at that form. The chat warning is simply that -- a warning. No automatic process filters work perfectly. Try explaining your favorite stir-fry recipe that uses shiitake mushrooms. Or schoolchildren trying to do research on Richard Nixon (who was nicknamed "Tricky Dick"), or even Mars exploration. (What? Searching for the letters S-E-X in that order?)

If you know everyone in the chat well, and everyone treats this as normal banter, nobody will report it and there's no problem. And if one person gets upset, it's an insult and grounds for moderation.

I wouldn't be too sure of that. Remember the quote attributed to Einstein about the two items that are infinite, and that tone of voice doesn't come across in text very well.

I’ve modded elsewhere - on debate/discussion forums and most of the ‘abuse’/‘insults’ reported are generally non-existent, misinterpretation, and/or due to uncharitable attitudes.

You might want to take a look at the threads about moderation. Many of them are complaints of "sure, I said something insulting, but it was a joke taken out of context. Can't the mods see this", or "wow, the mods on this site are really heavy-handed."

I don't think it's fair to assume that someone misinterpreting banter is due to a lack of intelligence. There are some really intelligent people who love games, but have social anxiety, and playing with other people online or in person can be an important step in overcoming it.

Someone experiencing this may already be distracted by a feedback loop of thoughts like I haven't figured out my strategy yet and all these people are judging me for not taking my turn fast enough... Somebody calling you a slimy lizard or saying they hope you die in chat might not come across as obviously playful.

I enjoy good-natured banter at a table, but virtually, it's much harder to "read the room" to make sure it is received as intended. You don't experience the awkward silence of making everyone uncomfortable because the thing you thought would be funny to say didn't land right. Unless you know who you're playing with, you can't always assume he person behind that username has the same sense of humor as you. It's better to err on the side of empathy.

Yes. Simply do not press "enter" after focus has shifted to the chat panel.

Or were you meaning the ability to mute other players? (Of which there is none right now. It has been suggested.)
