Big Time Soccer Beta feedback

Post by rafiki_33 »

A few thoughts / comments about the game.

The game is probably much better played real-time rather than turn-based since each offensive move requires the defender possibly make a challenge.

Could we include a way to allow me to signal I don't want to defend and let the offense play out their moves? Whether because I have no defense or I simply don't want to try to defend ... I'm inviting the offense to come in. Or maybe I allow them to approach until they hit my D1 or D2 areas? Just wish we had that flexibility.

From a game design standpoint, I feel like free-kicks are broken. If I'm driving towards the goal and I'm fouled, I am forced to take a free kick and I wind up losing possession quite often. This doesn't feel like soccer since I should be able to just continue on from where I was. Oddly sometimes I get to choose to kick, other times it just seems to force me to kick - likely I'm shooting if I'm in A1 or A2. I would still like that opportunity to not shoot, but to keep passing/dribbling.

Having played Ice Cold Ice Hockey (by same designer) I feel like there is a bit more flow to that game. I'm not sure if the dice aspect of soccer makes it too random but it does feel too random. In my mind soccer is a flowing game that goes back and forth and back and forth until someone unlocks the defense and gets a shot away. If that shot is inside the "box" it seems like the % should be higher, but maybe it truly is 3/20.

Huge thank you for developing this game goes to DrKarrote and of course the designer Andrew Fischer.

Just had another thought, when I'm on defense, it would be nice to be able to swap a card somehow to increase the chances I get a card that will allow me to play defense. I could be stuck with nothing but shot cards and if/when the other player shoots and scores or misses, I really can't do anything and it would be nice to be able to dump cards as they move up the field to prep for my next attack and/or defend (if possible).

Totally agree with the signal to not defend. I often find myself a bit frustrated on defense when I don't have a card to play on defense, but every move comes for me to hit the "no thanks" button to defend. Ideally, the game would be smart enough to recognize I don't have a card to play, but I think the solution that Rafiki suggests to signal that the defense doesn't want to defend could also be incredibly useful.
