This isn't true. The computer is not the one doing the misgendering. The misgendering is done by the dev who wrote the code. Whether it was intentional or not, the dev is misgendering people by not thinking more inclusively. Also, BGA only has 2 gender options, so if you're a one of the many other options, you either have to misgender yourself, or choose "Do not display" and get misgendered anyway.

I can't see why we can't have "his / her" as default to be substituted with "his" or "her" if the player has set their gender.

It's not ungrammatical, it doesn't misgender anyone but allows people to have the correct possessive adjective if they want.

This is also not true. Many people may identify as one gender but not use the pronouns typically associated with that gender (i.e. a woman may use they/them or he/him or some other set of pronouns).

Also, while "his/her" is grammatical, it is not inclusive to those who do not use those pronouns. Using "they/them/their" is a long standing, commonly used, grammatical usage that is gender neutral and inclusive.

Call me old-fashioned but I do not care about people of one gender who wish to use the pronouns of the other.

Not at all. Trans are people who identify as a different gender and are happy to be addressed as such. I'm fine with that.

Someone who claims to be a man but wants to be addressed as "her" is just annoying.
