I don't know, I think Rio Grande has done it as well as you can expect a company to do it. They allowed BGA to make their app in exchange for BGA giving way when the official app was ready. At the end of the day it's Rio Grande's game and they have a right to insist that people use their app. BGA should still come out of this well because they also dealt with Rio Grande in good faith. Hopefully other companies that don't currently like unofficial game apps may now say "BGA does it right, let's listen to them". This may mean more games for us and more options for BGA, everyone wins :D .

I agree. A better idea would be to let new players play up to a certain amount of games, say 20-25 (enough to get them hooked), then no longer allow play on BGA. They could then switch over. This would allow new players to be attracted to the game but still keep die-hards at the officially licensed site.

It's a pity, I really like the Dominion interface here at BGA. I hope the new one is at least as good.

@cab42: I absolutely agree with your assessment. Especially since there is only 1 expansion available here, Vaccarino & company could have drawn many customers from the player base simply by keeping it running alongside a link to the official site. As of right now there are over 15000 dominion players signed up at BGA.

At the very least they should have waited until their application was off the ground... I want to play Dominion at the new site but when I go there I see that they are in beta and closed to new members. If the official site is not running by the 22nd (when Dominion here is scheduled to end) I just might look into Isotropic, the free, underground Dominion app. And if I find Isotropic is nice enough, I might not even be interested in the official site anymore.

At best this is poor planning by Vaccarino & co.

With the failure to launch of Goko's version
http://pockettactics.com/2012/08/18/dom ... into-beta/
will BGA be delaying the taking down of their Dominion tables?

Their new Dominion app might be a brilliant and gorgeous port of the game but no matter how good it is, they are turning off a huge promotion engine by requesting take-down on this site. A much better strategy would be launch their new app and work with BGA (come to some arrangement) that allows Dominion to continue here and highlights that fact that the new Dominion Online Goko service exists (links, tasteful button or whatever).

If the new service is better, great, BGA players will check it out and still everyone wins as the player base is kept happy and given choice. The take down idea is a lose/lose. Two things I've learned from start-ups is that promotion is absolutely critical and don't piss off the customer base.

Game developers should watch how this audience limiting move plays out.

I totally agree +1
Better to go on with they both and let the audience decide.

I'm registered for the tournament listed as 8-23-12 AM. I hope that indeed it takes place before the game is shutdown.

There would be no reason for them to take Dominion down from other sites if their site was free.

The only logical reason they would centralize to one publisher-supported site would be to monetize it. (Otherwise they are just losing players)

If this is in fact the case (as I'd assume it is), I would have much rather them left Dominion on BGA and only opened it up for paying members, as I don't need to be on anymore board game sites, especially ones that only play one game (I like diversity and I have played every game on here).

I will miss Dominion on here :'(, but don't plan on writing any more checks to the Donald. (I'm sure he has made plenty from the base game + 7 and counting expansions)
