Re: Players sitting out in Arena to preserve ranking

Post by user___ »

_ Arena + turn-based seems incompatible due to the possibility to slow down losing game while accelerating winning games. This is especially true at the end of the season where all turn based games in progress are removed from Arena.
Maybe I just happen to be in games where this doesn't happen. And I feel like the advantage you can get from this is really minimal. Arena Elite seem to reflect true strength (at the moment) pretty well.

In any case, disabling an entire mode seems like a real strong hammer as an attempted solution.

You don't need to "solve the problem 100%". You just need it to happen rarely enough, with not enough advantage. Boardgamearena doesn't exclude questionable behaviour anyway so its strange to try get such a small point to a pristine state. For example, there are real-time players who will quit the game when they are losing and their opponent runs out of time. As a result the game is cancelled. This is a great advantage compared to players who don't do this (a player can get back into positive time by playing faster on future turns).

I want to reiterate others' suggestion: separate real-time and turn-based arena ranking. Treat them as two different games.

This way, the choice is left in the players' hands. The ones who think turn-based is a problem can just choose to not play turn-based arena and have the same result as the current implementation of disable turn-based arena.

It does not fix the issue of choosing the order of wins/losses to get an higher league/rank.
I think the order problem can be fixed by this two rules:

1.- For each game, in arena mode, you cannot move in a turn-base game if it is your turn in another turn-based game, where you have not moved compared with all your other turn-based games of the same games. For example, if you are playing games A,B,C of RallymanGT, and it is your turn in B and C, and you move on B, then you cannot move on B again until you move on C.

2.- For each game, in arena mode, you cannot start/join a real time game if it is your turn in a turn-based game (ignoring the last X minutes for easy joining)

Separating in games would allow playing some games faster than others, for example using a mobile device:https://boardgamearena.com/forum/viewto ... 50&#p69114

I would also punish players that do not move at all (e.g. for each arena season you can timeout 3 games, if you go beyond the limit you cannot play in that arena season anymore). You can also limit the number of concurrent turn-based games (5 or 10 at most) for each game.

These rules have to be refined, sure, but I think a system like this can make feasible having the turn-based arena mode again.

I'm also very frustrated with this overkill decision (let say 20% of the turn based are abusers, if only 8% of the players are turn based, it means that this decision if for only 2% of the players?!).

I don't have large time slot to play real time so I like to play few minutes on several tables when I've some time. Also, I don't have to wait for other players (for making the table and for making a move). And I don't like playing simple mode since game modes are sometimes weird, and matchmatching could be strange too (and also I want to see my level, and elo is broken in simple mode).

Edit: thanks for the udpate!

Dear all,

Following your feedback on turn-based Arena, we created a dedicated post to find a good solution and maybe to get turn-based Arena back.

Well this thread is all about a solution NOW. How about letting season 3 run like the one before and think/offer solution for next season?

I mean a lot of people just can't play the way they want anymore which is bad. And I doubt that 'only 8% is playing turnbased arena' shows you the whole problem. A lot of fast paste casual games are played real time all day (Can't stop, Sushi go, etc.) and of course its a lot more. But you need to factor in all this slow paced strategy games which takes longer by nature and therefore a lot less games played but those game offer a lot of actual PLAY TIME.

Because cheaters are cheating now.

I understand this but you not even show ANY list of previous arena contenders and how they end up. The only one visible is the world champion, that it. So before this cheater stuff is really important you need to offer us rankings etc. visible somehow AFTER arena is finished. Otherwise its just 'world champion' and this can be checked and banned if there was really bad cheating.

The problem is just not on the same level than "cancel all turn based arenas".

We want to address this issue too.

Just to make sure everyone understand Arena history:
_ the first season (beta / 0) ended during the COVID crisis.
_ since then, we are struggling with a very high audience - which is something we are happy with - but a lot of new challenges, so we had to let the Arena go as it was.
_ now that it's the end of season 2, and now that we faced most of the challenges coming with the audience, we can fix the most obvious issues with Arena, and turn-based cheating is one obvious issue.

So obviously, there are still things missing (not just for Arena): all our scheduled work has been shifted by 6-9 months due to crisis. So things are coming, but please be patient.

I thoroughly enjoy the competitive element that Arena play brings and also play as many turn based competitions as I can in my favourite games. The joy of turn based is that you can drop into the site and play for 10 minutes if you have that time available rather than commit to a full game in real time, some of the games can take an hour to play out.
I don't think that many people are concerned about the problems B and C that allow people to move up the grades; if someone is in the elite league and hasn't earned it, they only get found out when playing much better players. I really like the solution proposed:

"For A&B: For a given game, force you to play on the turn-based tables where you are waited for the longest time

Ie: if this is your turn on a table of 7 Wonders since 6 hours, you MUST play on this table before any other Arena 7 Wonders table.
"

While it doesn't solve problem C, it really stops the problems at the top end of the rankings and would be a great compromise to allow those of us playing turn-based competitively to play fairly. I do also think that turn based and real time should be separate
