What do you prefer, lose with honor or win with tricks?

There are two types of players, those who enjoy the play and those who enjoy the result. I've always been one of the first, I don't care if I win or lose. I am not competitive. I understand (although I don't share it) those who enjoy winning. Well, getting better at yourself and getting better at others is motivating.

What I have never understood is the reason to win with tricks. Because you may have one more victory in your backpack, but you know that that victory has not really been your merit. In tournaments I have seen plays that are not finished because the player who is going to lose has more time to think than his rival (or me, it has also happened to me). In these cases, that person just choose not to move and wait time out. What does it provide you to appear as a winner of something that you know you have not won? I guess in the arena it will start to happen the same.

But, I don't know... Am I crazy? Do you think the same? What do you prefer, lose with honor or win with tricks?

For me, the purpose of a game is to have fun. It is recreation. Or, re-creation. Or, "to make new again." While it is enjoyable to win, the main goal is to maximize the fun. I played a game a couple of days ago with my kids. A few minutes into the game, I had a winning move. I chose not to take it so the game could be extended and we could still be chatting.

That being said, waiting for a player to move for longer than I've agreed to is decidedly not fun. If the only interaction I am having with a player is seeing their moves, and they run out of time, they are reducing the total fun of the game. I play mostly turn-based games, and if a player decides not to honor their commitment to play in a reasonable time then I have no problem kicking them from the table when the timer reaches zero. Mentally, though, this is more about avoiding the pain of waiting than it is trying to get a win. (I also tend to play multi-player games that break anywhere from a bit to a lot when one player is in zombie mode, so kicking a player is almost a decision to end the game.)

I understand your point. I play all my games in turns. I think you can tell who passes from playing and who for whatever reason has not been able to connect. There are people that I wait for even though they spend time and people that I expel when their time passes, but is not the same two players with a different time zone (in the last case my thinking time went to sleep, the two players had a very different time zone), than the player that runs out of time on the first move or the one you see connected but still doesn't play.

I speak about this situation in tournaments. They have a fixed duration and the game ends after x time if the game is not over. you cannot kick a player out. And I meant to let time pass in clearly lost games, not half games, being both connected. For example, last move in a game that was left unplayed for hours, until it was timed out.




I also want to say that I have not met many such people. there are people who fight to the end and people who finish games that clearly have losses even though they could win them by time out. And of course I always try to play with those people again, they are great rivals. I play tournaments to be able to play several games of a game that I want to play. I don't look at what position I finish or who wins. Joining a tournament is simply easier and faster for me than opening 15 different and simultaneous tables of the same game. And in tournaments also I know good players

You mean, your opponent in your screenshot did not play and won on time?

As far as I know the rules, then you must have exceeded your time limit before he could do that.

In a tournament game the time limit is part of the rule set (you might not agree, one can discuss about that). So I can understand your opponent, since I am one of these "competetive guys" and you will find lots of these in tournaments.

Some players might even resort to timed wins to boost their statistics (win/loss, elo, top X,.. ) outside of tournaments. Personally, I see no point in that.
