ONE - Now in Alpha

Post by AbstractGames »

I'm excited to announce that my game ONE is now in Alpha, courtesy of developer Stanislav Stepanenko (stst)!

ONE is a simple, scalable abstract strategy game for 2-6 players. Form the largest group of connected stones, and prevent your opponents from doing the same. Capture opponents' stones to block their expansion and add to your score. The player with the most points at the end of the game wins.

Looking for any and all feedback—gameplay, aesthetics, rules, the works. Very excited to hear your thoughts!

I've played "ONE" just one time so review may not contain all the necessary info but still.

1. We didn't encounter any bugs in 2p game which is great.
2. I'm not sure whether you should really mark stones that can capture: it's player responsibility to think of that. Yeah, it adds difficulty but...Maybe it can be an option.
3. Confirmation is good but the second button can be called "cancel" and not "restart turn".
4. I guess when a player has some stones left in the end of the game they should be counted too. Either "+X per stone left" (X = 0,5 or 1) rounded or the game can give him an opportuninity to place these stones on the board to see if they can add some points to the largest group.

That's all for now :)

P.S. Just finished 3p60 game. That was much more interesting and much more fluent. So i guess reccomendation about "2p for the best experience" may not be accurate.

Hi there and thanks for the feedback!

1. Glad to hear there aren't any bugs! It seems to be smooth in the games I've played so far too.
2. I've asked stst to remove the markings from stones that have captures available; this will be an option that players can choose to play with if they like.
3. I agree with this and I'll request this change be made.
4. I hadn't considered counting stones left in bags. I may experiment with that on my own and will consider adding after I have some more data. The way the game is set up now, each player has the exact same number of turns, and what they do with each turn (adding stones, capturing them) is up to them. If you have stones left over, it typically means you've made captures, which should mean that you've gotten more points than you would have if you'd just put the stones down—especially if you've managed to capture multiple stones in one turn.

Glad the three-player game went well! It definitely adds another dimension and I'm excited to see the results of more 3+ player games as I review the replays. Interested to hear any more feedback you may have as you keep playing.
