Looking for other quiet players

My preferred game of Hanabi has no chat going on during the play. Perhaps a little in the beginning to establish conventions. And then plenty at the end if wanted to discuss what could have gone better, clues that weren't received, etc.

I make *plenty* of mistakes and want to learn from them.

However, as I've played with more people rated 500+ I've discovered a disconcerting number of them love to make comments, snide or otherwise during play. I find all of them distracting and unwanted.

I also find the hardest decks the most fun to play and am unlikely to abandon games. Babying my rating holds no interest to me.

J adore le jeu dans la réalité par contre sur la plateforme c est désagréable de jouer avec des personnes qui ont une stratégie propre et qui veulent te l imposer du coup il n y a plus de suspense ni de hasard.par exemple il y en a qui m a engueulé et après t explique que quand il met un indice couleur faut jouer la carte et un indice nombre faut le jeter mais tous les joueurs n ont pas les même code.d autre tu doit jeter tes cartes sans indices de gauche à droite et t engueule car tu es sensé deviner qu' il joue comme ca.dans la vrai vie t enchaîne les parties en devenant au fur et à mesure les stratégies des uns et des autres c est plus amusant que sur la plateforme.c est pénible de se faire insulter parce que tu ne lit pas dans les pensées des autres.il y a beaucoup de mauvais perdant pour ce jeu.

I know a very good Hanabi player who hates chatting during the game. (Maybe they just can't concentrate when the chat is blinking).
The first time I played with them, they were pretty upset because me and another player were chatting a lot in the chat during the game.

I just suggested that they tell us at the beginning of the game that they prefer no chat at all until the end.
Personally, I don't mind chatting during the game (if it's after a play, to avoid chat clues), and I can't know who's ok with it or not.

Now, every time I see them, they copy-paste a polite message asking everyone not to chat, and knowing that, everyone is pretty much respectful about it.

What I really don't like is chatting about the game during the game. Things like "why didn't you let me bluff that", "???", or "sorry, I misinterpreted the red clue" may look harmless enough, but they do give information that should not be given in chat (and worse, in some cases they show lack of trust in your fellow players). An "exception" could be something like "where the heck is 1g?" when all other colors are finished, no 1g has been seen, and everyone has been discarding for several rounds. The only such comment I accept is informing of misclicks, but it must be for all misclicks (even if they turn out useful), and only misclicks (not mistakes you realize right after clicking).

I agree with you here 100%, and my patience has run completely dry on dealing with it. Yes, even chat like you describe can give out info. After something like a bomb or discarded unique card, even if it's obvious to all players that something's gone wrong, it isn't obvious to everyone why. That finesse you're mad I didn't respond to? Yes, I missed it. I'm sorry. After the game, I'll accept all the yelling you want to dole out. But by going "???" at me in the moment, you've informed the fourth person at the table that they don't have the same card at their left that I did. Or you're telling someone two places after me that they don't have a valuable card in their chop that the person one place after me is going to need that token I just gained by discarding to tell them about. Or etc etc etc.

And then the arguing about it gets worse. More info is given. "It's fine, all the cards that were involved in that clue have been played now." Were we all supposed to know that?

It drives me insane. I will ask politely once or twice for strategy chat to stop. Generally I get ignored, if not outright abused. And if it continues - which it usually does - I consider the game tainted by unfairly gained info and will stop participating in any attempt to get a good score. Then people want to abandon...because abandoning only the co-op games that are going badly isn't unfair score inflation at all

Stuff like you describe, the player who has erred being the one to apologize, I try to be more tolerant of that, but imo it's still giving out extra info - because again, if something isn't a mistake, but a reasonable move considering a card someone else has in their hand, there would be no apology.

What I find really ironic about all this is that I started out playing this game offline, and a big part of the challenge was always not giving away information nonverbally - don't look horrified if someone's about to trash a 5, don't tap either of the blue cards you're telling them about more emphatically than the other, etc. I started playing here and thought that a perk would be that it would be much easier to be fair.

Man, was I naïve.

i fully agree with u that chatting about the game should never happen DURING game, only after the game.

i believe one major reason some players indulge in such type of chats is because there is not a proper way to talk after the game, since usually most people either quickly find a new game or go offline. not to mention that replaying the game is not easy / straightforward either. for these reasons, people staying to talk through and review a just-finished game are quite rare, and even if some of the players want to do that it is difficult to coordinate unless everyone wants to.

i highly recommend playing on hanablive, i have been playing there for about 2 years and it is a vastly superior site to play Hanabi for a myriad of reasons.
1. game history - at any time during or after the game, u can replay the game turn-by-turn from the start (or from a specific turn) by simply using left/right arrow keys. this encourages a "post-game review" culture, and indeed many people who play there try to review every game after it is over, which makes talking during the game a lot rarer to see.
2. better UI, including ability to do hypothetical play sequences from a specific turn.
3. automatic tracking of negative clues - for example all cards that were in ur hand when u received a blue clue automatically become "not blue", and u can easily see that several turns later even after u have played all your blue cards.
4. ability to take notes on cards - if u write "b3" on your card that card will now look like exactly b3, but only to u!
5. the conventions are much more structured than what BGA has. here there is essentially no structure at all, just a few "standard" rules like finesse, bluff, "number to chop means save", etc. but players on hanablive account for many more edge-case scenarios and clearly define what certain "confusing" looking clues mean.
(EDIT: how could i forget the most important one of all lol) 6. its free! no need for any sort of premium membership, everyone can create or join games for free.

Now i remember why i didnt play hanabi for years. The players are the absolute worst. Just Chernobyl.
