Score counting in Carcassonne

Post by Dr Skepsis »

Hi,

I find it very difficult to follow score counting in the end of a match for Carcassonne. My proposals:
  • Display a message stating that score counting is about to start
  • It would be beneficial to first display "rising point numbers" on the map
  • Wait just a bit
  • Then move the players token towards right edge of the display
  • Maybe at the same time with above row to display only ONE message stating both informational lines currently displayed in two steps
It's just that point of eye contact on the screen is always lagging behind at the moment. There is nothing to suggest where to look before it's too late. Just my thoughts how to improve user experience :D

A pause button would be nice.

Wait just a bit
It's interesting how differently people think about the final rating. For me, this "All the little angels rise up" routine is the most tedious part of the game. Especially in the final rating.

I am coming from the Deep Silver Edition of Carcassonne (formerly Koch Media). There was no animation at all for points. They were simply recorded, and the game painted a little flag on every area that got points, in the color of the player(s) who got the points. The location of the flag is the location of one of the meeples that I had on that area.

Hovering with the mouse shows a popup with the points that were received for that area. The popup shows the meeples, pigs and wares that were involved in building that area (also those that got no points). Sometimes, the flags were difficult to see. But it might be possible to enlarge those flags when the game is over.

I just played a nostalgia game against one of the Deep Silver bots - and got nearly dizzy from the speed of the game play :)

I'm going to agree with OP on this one. I can't follow it. If I play turn-based I have to look back through the end game anyway, but if I play live I don't want to have to come back and play through it again.

The most important statement OP made is it's hard for your eyes to keep up, because you don't know where it's going next, and by time I see something and look, it's too late. It's not even any fun to win when I'm not really sure why.

The scoring is a known quantity. You either know the rules or you don't. Once you do then there's no real need to see what is going on, you really just need to know who has won.

If there is any improvement to make at the scoring stage it would imo simply be to just score each individual colour at a time. i.e. Score one player's entire set of Meeples then another persons etc instead of doing it haphazard. That's surely how people score in the real physical board game.

If I could wish for an improvement to the scoring, it would actually be for it to go more quickly to be honest. Perhaps simultaneously showing all the road points, then all the city points etc would help people who want it to be easier to see but I'd be happy with it just going faster.

Regarding how people do it in real life, actually I do it like BGA seems to do it. I tell all the other players to call out colours and scores as they remove the meeple and I just move the scores. Obviously we leave farms to the end.

That is how we do the scoring in real life too.

And yes I would be fine to speed it up too.

It might be a good idea to write the final score next to every scoring meeple, and then offer a "continue" button. Until you continue, you can examine the final board at your leisure. That's one option.

Players with difficulties seeing colors - well, I think that they won't play BGA anyway because there's really no playing aid for them. But it could be helpful for everybody to add a tooltip to each meeple that shows it's color name and the points that it is scoring.

Another option cound be to adopt the scoring display of the now serverless and out-of-market DeepSilver Carcasonne (unless there are copyright issues). When I hover over a meeple, I get a tooltip that shows the nameof the region where it is placed, with the value of the region, the goods, and all meeples (small, big, builder) in it. This tooltip would also be great while playing, but I understand that it is BGA paradigm that players are on their own while playing, and shouldn't get computer help for their strategy.

For completed regions, DeepSilver Carcassonne showed a little flag where the meeples were, and also said tooltip.

Just my 20 Euros (that's what I payed for DeepSilver Carcassonne 19 years ago ;) ).
