Arena Idea: Count the peak of points not the current score

Post by Wonderful Plays »

Basically just an idea that popped into my mind. Crown the champion and give achievements for the peak of arena points instead of current value.
Everything else stays the same. This will encourage people to play more instead of climbing and the parking. It will also be a lot more positive, as falling down doesn't seem so bad then.

Obviously it would have to be from the next arena season the earliest.

I totally support this idea, I think it has already been suggested in a previous discussion as a way to prevent people from parking.
The current system can be quite good to determine the winner, but the next places are not always representative of the season's performances since some players reached very high ELO scores but then fell down as they tried to reach first place.

The only problem I see concerning this suggestion is that it could decrease the readability of arena rankings, since it would require to keep the track of both current and maximum arena ELO scores.

Very much agreed! Right now the arena leader has not that much to gain and a lot to lose if they continue playing. Towards the end of the season there might be a lot of parking and a lot of leapfrogging, and it comes down to whoever can get a little lucky and/or can get the timing right.

Additionally, in the current system, the second place player can jump ahead playing a realtime game at the last second, with the arena leader helpless (and possibly not even able to play due to work and/or timezone restrictions).

I think this suggestion incentivizes everyone to continue playing, leading to more and higher quality arena games.

I totally support this, too!
One major part of playing competitive is to get some kind of proper feedback on how well you are doing compared to others. As pointed out by Iguana, the current EAS system and the position in the rankings do not reflect this well. The result of just one game can make a difference of ~30-40 points. If you have two games in a row with bad luck, you are down 50-60 points and there was nothing you could do about it. How am I supposed to care for my ranking at all? Determining the overall winner is ok with the current system but only a tiny fraction of players is able to get there. Most players probably want to have some reasonable ranking for themselves, which the current system does not provide in a good way.

I played a lot Arena games over the year but currently, I totally lost interest because of the very reason stated above.

And as stated before, once you hit a very good score, you are kind of encouraged to stop playing. The higher my score, the more stressful I feel during games. If we instead chose the peak score for determination of rankings, then each time you hit a new high score you would feel very accomplished in a meaningful way. Hunting for a new highscore (while your current highscore is not taken away from you) is much more positive and fun than the reliable stream of frustration induced by the current system.

I don't see any problem in the presentation/display of two columns in the leaderboard. "Current Score" and "Max Score" are categories that are really easy to get. What could be a problem with max score is that your current game result may not impact your ranking immediately. This could actually keep players away from Arena or be perceived as less fun than a system that allows the very next game to always have an immediate impact on your ranking. Also cheating could be encouraged. If you can loose repeatedly without impact on your rank, this might open the door for some nasty shenanigans.

As a solution, we could apply a weighted average of "Current Score" and "Max Score" (e.g. 50/50 or 25/75) as the best reference for rankings. (This has also been suggested before.) IMO this would allow us to have the best of both worlds. But overall, simply taking the peak score would already definitly be better than the current system.

I'm glad we got some support for this and you make some excellent points dschingis27.

Can we get some admin/developer attention?

I guess we need an official suggestion in the bug section so that people can vote for it. Since you are the original poster, it's your right to go for it. ;) (If you don't, I will eventually.)

A first step could be to just display the highscore as a second column in the leaderboard and maybe make it optionally possible to sort by the highscore. Then we could observe the response of the majority of Elite players. Or maybe you could introduce a new ranking system only for 2-3 mid-popular games as a test run before changing it for all games.

This might help reducing end-season stalling. It seems to be not that hard to implement.
As dschingis27 suggested, adding the maximum record next to current rating in the leaderboard (+post-game screen and/or in-game player panel if possible) will suffice.
