Meeple colour for premium members

Post by evereverever »

When playing against another premium member who has the same preferred meeple colour, it happens that I get another colour assigned (yes I know you can select a 2nd favourite). After hundreds of games with blue, playing with another colour (even though quite rarely) can be confusing. Especially that you‘ll only play your 2nd colour when the opponent plays your 1st colour, so you‘ll always play against your preferred colour when you play your 2nd... Why not make it so that the colour never changes? Both players can play with blue, but they will only be that colour to themselves. Just how you can select the hand rotation independently of what happens on other people‘s screens. As for spectators, they can see a random colour as that doesn‘t matter. And instead of referring to people‘s meeple colour, just use their usernames.

This is especially annoying for a two player game.

Say my colour favourites are Blue/Red. Opponent favourites are Blue/Green.

Scenario 1 game will be played as:
Me: Blue
Opponent: Green

Scenario 2 game will be played as:
Me: Red
Opponent: Blue

I don‘t mind #1 (though I doubt my opponent will like it), but #2 makes it annoying to look at the board and see all these meeples that I associate with my game 99% of the time.

It‘s all just code, I hope it would not be too much of an ask. I know other players are thinking like that too, as it often comes up when I play against someone else who normally plays blue.

That's not at all as easy as you make it sounds : how do you actually store the game state if it's relative to the player ?
And there are some games where the colors are actually in the logs (Pseudo will play the white marks, ...), so how can you handle that ?

I can see this implemented in some games, but again that's not an easy task and I would say not a priority for any dev right now.

You should start a suggestion in the tracker to see if many people thinks that could be an improvement

I do think it is smarter to disconnect colour and player and it would be great to have things be custom (for premium at least). Not sure I understand the question about storing the game state. I don‘t feel that strongly about it and I don‘t think it has to be any priority, just a suggestion because it has been bugging me every now and then looking for the wrong meeples.

That can be handled quite easily. You assign a colour to each player for every player and the text just reads it out.

{username} will play {color}

also I have seen this pop up in the forum where it would be somewhat useful/related

If a colourblind person reads the log and it says a certain colour, that may be of no help to them. Username could be more definitive.

Thanks I have made a suggestion, thought this was for bugs only.

Please vote if you feel the same!

Re: Meeple colour for premium members, easy solution

A lot of people address each other in the chat window using their colors rather than names. If I see myself in blue and you see yourself in blue, that's extremely confusing and not really workable.

I understand your problem though. One (rather easy) solution I can think of is changing the look of the whole website according to your current color. There could be a semi-transparent blue layer in front of the wooden floor tile layer. That should give most non-colorblind people a good orientation.

Regarding colors, I would also really like if I could assign preferences per game as well.
Like, I want to have a blue meeple in this game, but I'd rather play with a pink pin in that one. It happens.

I suggested whit the bug report, about some icons noticing which one of example (two blues, one whit triangle and one whit square) and also their colours being named in their names just under it. Here an example.

TheClaudeQC
Orange (square)

Random 1
Orange (cercle)

Random 2 (btw he the only one whit that colour)
Red

Random 3
Green (square)

Random 4
Green (cercle)

Random 5
Green (triangle)

Whit that, both colourblind and favorite colour will be solved. :)
