Should I use mousewheel up/down events to zoom in and out?

Post by shadowphiar »

I'm starting work on a game which will probably benefit from being able to zoom the interface in and out easily. In some games, e.g. Carcassonne, the user can zoom the interface by using the scroll wheel while the pointer is over the map. Now personally, as I user I usually dislike it when the scroll wheel does anything other than moving the page view up and down. But as a developer, I can see that other approaches (e.g. having to hold shift or some other modifier while wheeling) might never be discovered by the users.

Do other people think this is a good UI, or should I find a different approach? There's presumably some benefit in being consistent with other games on BGA even if something different might be preferable on its own.

A lot of people play on tablets and phones. Mouse wheel actions will not be usable by them.

That's true, and I would certainly plan to add handlers for touchscreen events such as the pinching in and out gesture. The desktop UI can be independent of this.

on Rallyman GT, Mistergos has added a magnifying glass at top right of the screen for zooming, arrows up, bottom, left & right and mouse wheel for moving in all 4 directions.
