GBA is no fun anymore

Post by B-L-S-S-B-G-A »

The whole scoring system might be great for newbies, but once you reach a certain level everything gets absolutely demotivational. A single loss costs that much points, no matter if normal or arena mode, that playing becomes more like trying not to lose than just having fun. Additionally the bizarre losing streaks are taking the last bit of motivation out of the game. Always losing ain't fun and the luck part doesn't seem random at all. I was here to have some fun spending my time, but the fun is gone and doesn't reappear even if taking some time off.

Well, the nice thing is that there are plenty of different interesting games to start with! It's totally normal that a game with a significant proportion of luck involved can get demotivational after a while. Exactly because it feels more and more pointless if you experience limited influence on the game result again and again. It happened to me many times.

It's totally worth it to learn new games and the most popular ones are popular for a reason. Also after a long break, an old favorite can regain its charm.

Alternatively, you could just not pay attention to ranking and just play the games you enjoy.

You mean BGA ratings? Measuring and estimating skill level by win/loss record is the purpose of that system.
Losing a game decreases around 10 points and indeed it might be demotivating.
But yeah, the rating will eventually stop fluctuating and stabilize in somewhere, and that's the current floor of that player's skill level.
However the floor also depends on the game's inherent luck factor cause it evens the score between players.
Pure luck does not have anything to do with experience or mastery.

You are possibly refering to Lucky Numbers, and yes, that game depends on luck a bit... for its namesake.
Nobody has ever reached Expert(≥500) even though the game being played a lot.
Your rating is above 300, and it seems to be the practical top tier. Take pride in your skill! :)

If you don't like stalling or losing rating, you may play a training mode game.
Or you may try other strategic games like euros or abstracts as other replies suggest.

When you lose almost every game without having a chance there is nothing left to enjoy. And i'm not talking about Lucky Numbers. Backgammon is even worse.

I think it's a problem of a ranking system. I see it happen across any game where people get a ranking and then get afraid to lose it (like online video games).

Also there is like 280 games or something on the site to play until you get annoyed by your rank fluctuating.

One suggestion, you may want to add the following to your profile as custom CSS:

Code: Select all

.gamerank { display: none; }
That way you will never see any ELO rating, either yours or opponent's. This is crude and can be improved but I think that people who really do not want to see their rating could use such tricks.

Or you can convince yourself that is is just a game with strangers. ;-)
