I have been playing 7 wonders on BoardGameArena for about 9 months, and have started playing the new edition in the last month. At times my ELO has been well above 400, high enough to be ranked in the top 100 players. But it has always come down again quite rapidly. Currently my ELO is 317.
As far as I can tell, I don't play any differently over time. I always play with 7 players and choosing the wonder side. So I feel luck must play a big part in the variation in my ELO. Certainly the times I have been over 400, it only takes a couple of mediocre games to drop 50 points. The most obvious random elements seem to me to be which wonder you get (Hali good, Olympia bad), your access to resources nearby which can totally mess up construction of the wonder, how militaristic your neighbours turn out to be, and which guilds appear in your hand at the start of age 3.
Has anyone had any success at keeping their ELO score above 400 for an extended time? If so would you care to share how you overcome these random elements?
Or any other thoughts on the role of luck in 7 wonders more generally.
