No Thanks! is now in beta

Post by Mogri »

No Thanks? Yes please!

Image
No Thanks! is a fast-playing card game with very simple rules. A card is placed face-up on the table. On your turn, you either put a chip on the card or take the card and all of the chips on it. Cards give you points, and points are bad -- but if you get cards with consecutive numbers, only the lowest number in your run counts against you. Nine cards are randomly removed at the start of each game.

No Thanks! makes for a quick real-time game, and, thanks to reviewers' suggestions, can be played fairly quickly in turn-based mode as well with the autoplay feature.

Thanks to everyone who gave it a try in alpha, and special thanks to the following:
  • AMIGO, the publisher, for the license and approval.
  • Ad-Elie for suggesting the autoplay feature.
  • fred_eli and Ez0ah for many helpful bug reports and suggestions.

Would it be possible to have an option to play X number of games in a row, with cumulative scoring? When i play this game with friends/family we usually play 3 or 4 games and total our scores as this evens out some of the randomness and bad luck you can encounter in a single game.

Great implementation, but a couple of minor notes

- Love the ability to say no until a certain amount is reached
- Can the cards be made a little smaller? On a wide screen TV they are quite large and as a result I end up doing a lot of scrolling up and down. For comparison in sizes I can have all of my cards and the 4 rows in 6 Nimmit with no scrolling. Alternatively perhaps the players hands could be made more compact?

Otherwise from the couple of games I've played it's been fantastic. Thank you for implementing this one :)

You're not the first to request this. I know there is at least one edition of the game where this is an official rule, but it's not in the AMIGO release. I may eventually add it, but it's on the backburner for now.

You are likewise not the first to mention this. Due to how it's implemented, on most devices, this is more of an issue of aspect ratio than of total screen size, so "wide screen" may not be doing you any favors here. That said, there is an upper limit to the size of the active card, and I'm surprised you haven't hit it.

Making a thing look good across every possible resolution is a difficult (and occasionally impossible) task. I'm sympathetic to you and others who have reported issues like this. I'm working on some modifications that should improve your experience, but I would still expect to scroll down in games with a large number of players.

This is a really solid implementation. I just wanted to chime in and say "kudos!" I've never played "No Thanks" before, but I'm hooked, and will likely buy the cardboard version as well, much like I did with The Crew and a number of other games on BGA, which I'm sure is why designers/publishers are happy to see their work implemented here.

Thank you for your hard work in creating a version of this game for BGA and also to the playtesters.

In face to face play there is a varient in which each player is given a face down card from the discard deck which they can play in their turn immediately after taking a card. Which we often played at our club and I found made an interesting change.

Would it be possible to considering adding this?

If you can find the variant in a rulebook, then I'll consider it.

This game is simple and seems pretty much problem free from what I can tell.

When is it coming off beta?

I'm sure the announcement would get some players coming to the table.

Thanks! I don't have any influence over when it comes out of beta -- that's up to the publisher -- though I do know that BGA currently has a backlog for their releases. My guess would be "not especially soon" :)

That said, even in beta, No Thanks! has been pretty popular: it's hovering around the median for concurrent games in progress out of the entire game list, and it seems like there are always a few realtime games in progress.

I tried your game and it's nice and clear, good job !

It seems that hidden token count is default rule, don't you think it should be visible by default ?
When you play real version, I guess you can count or at least estimate opponent token count
