Confusion on following suit

Me and my friends were playing and encountered some game interactions that weren't happening as far as my limited understanding of the rules. The Red player had to win a yellow task three times before he got the checkmark, this happened in mission 1 and 2. At another point, a player placed a green card and another put a yellow card, and won the trick which satisfied his yellow task. Even though it was not following suit from the green. Anyone able to help out a new player.

You only need to follow suit if you have a card of the leading cards colour, otherwise you can trump or discard.

To complete your objective you just need to win a trick with that card in it. That card could be your own winning card for the trick or a discard from another player, either way you complete the objective.
