Can we stop with the good game when it wasn't a good game?

Post by Ecogeek »

Sometimes. (Often when I'm playing) It wasn't a good game. I was crushed. It just seems really disingenuous when you completely utterly destroy someone and say, "Well that was a good game. That's how a game should be."

Doesn't sit right with me, but I don't know what the solution is.

Sorry for rant. Feel free to delete.

I agree 100%.
For me, it is hypocritical, shallow or insensible to do that.

Even when someone lags or gets out of time and dismissed (expelled), someone always says "GG", or any variation (without any irony implied).

For me, no game is good for everyone (from the winning logic; unless it is a cooperative game like Hanabi), so i prefer to say "good day" instead, meaning "i wish you a good day, despite how good or bad the game was to you". Or most often, i prefer to just say nothing.
But I understand and accept the fact that most players say "I wrote the annoying GG because the game was good for me 'cause i learnt how to be crushed, which is still good; i learnt something and I hope i won't be crushed so bad in the future".

If I am really annoyed by the robotic messages (gl, hf, gg), I prefer to say "No" after the "gg", to which someone shockingly replies with the really complex "?"; as in... "I am vaguely curious about what your NO might mean, but I don't have the full energy to write a complete question, so i just write <?>".
And I also use the Red Thumb a lot... which is extreme in this case, but allowed by the site (RTs are subjective).

So I will never understand why robotic messages are considered the definition of polite.
I prefer players who personalise the chat, or who at least don't use abbreviations (so Good Day, instead of GG, etc.). I guess some folks might be worried about muscle soreness on their fingers, but want to be polite at all cost.

There is no solution to this, because people are different.

Yeah. I like it a lot when people say things like, "Thanks for playing with me." Or such. A bit of personal touch and that is much better than just good game. Especially when you just stomped me.

It also appreciates that you are spending your time, which is valuable, getting crushed. :)

It is funny because I hear this complaint in every video game ever made. Personally I don't mind if someone says GG when I lose horrible. GG is not meant to mean it was an equal match just a way to say thanks for playing I had fun and you are a good opponent. It is mostly just good sportsmanship. Getting mad when someone says GG is bad sportsmanship ;)

In sports a lot of times teams will say "good game", you don't decide "wow we beat you guys so bad I won't say good game". It is just a polite gesture to shake someone's hand after a competitive game with a stranger. The closest you can really do is say "gg" after a game.

If you are going to start not saying "gg" based on how badly the opponent did that is quite rude if you think about it. You are basically saying your opponent was so bad I won't say gg/thank you/was fun etc...

In BGA I actually sometimes forget to say GG because I am still getting used to the chatroom, especially on turn based games sometimes the game is just over all of a sudden lol.

What if you opponent has had a bad day? Are you going to impose upon them that the day is a good one?

Everything can be twisted to appear callous, it doesn't mean that it is.

Isn't that the difference between being polite and being kind?
Being polite is just following protocols and conventions. Actually writing a personalized message to thank the other player is being kind, which is a level significantly higher than just being polite.

I agree 100% with the OP.
I don’t get why I‘d have to appreciate it just because someone is too lazy to type „thanks for the game“ instead of „gg“.

And it‘s not about walking away without saying anything, but how „gg“ specifically can be inappropriate depending on the circumstances, and that something else would work better.

Exactly! I see "GG" as something polite to say at the end and to end it on a good note. To signify that you enjoyed playing with them, whether you lost or won. I've lost games fairly badly and for me it sucked, but I still say GG as if I was playing with them in real life and shaking their hand. A lot of people forget their manners and common courtesy in online games.

I also say GG because it is quick as opposed to typing out a message to someone whom will probably have left by the time I pressed enter.

Honestly, this is such a weird discussion hahahaha. I occasionally do not like seeing "gg" but that's only when I'm feeling bitter and jaded over losing because I started to take winning too seriously as opposed to just enjoying the game. But that's on me.

I generally think the phrase "good game" refers to enjoying playing the game rather than "this was a quality example of a playthrough of this game". Similar to what Boardnoremac said, though I really think it's quality of opponent agnostic.

It's also a concise and accepted shorthand, the value of which shouldn't be discounted. Trying to come across in a genuine way to strangers on the internet is enough of a struggle as it is. ;)
