Sorry, I can't speak to that. There are plenty of 4-player games in progress, so it's not the player count.

I can try adding your friends to the group.

I also get the error that players must be part of the testing group.

I may have misunderstood, then, but I thought they changed alpha a couple months ago such that only the table creator needed to be a group member.

I asked in the alpha program update thread.
I misunderstood too, this is only is only available to full BGA reviewers, not those who are granted access to a specific alpha.
