Is this something that moderators need to worry about?

Post by Jerry_H5 »

Hello. I observed something earlier, and I cannot determine why a person (or several people) would do this.

I went to the lobby (aka "Play Now") and considered playing a game of Abalone with a stranger. in the list of available games there were three games, each started by a newly created account, of the form "am2151nn". (am215246, am215147, and am215104). I checked; all three accounts were newly created South Korean accounts.
I suppose it could be someone, or a group of people, testing... something? Why would one create a whole bunch of new generic accounts? And why have them all start new games? It's just rather bizarre to me, and I don't know what it means. If it's already been covered here, I apologize; I have no idea what I'd search for to find out more information. And it might be something totally innocuous. Just very curious.

I've attached a screenshot.

Thanks.

The letters and numbers make me think bots...

Edit:

I googled “am215146” and only got one result - a foreign website (possibly Scandinavian) offering ‘fake temporary email’ which sounds pretty dodgy... if the worst thing people are using that for is to set up BGA accounts it would be surprising!

EditEdit: Although one fairly innocent use I just thought of would be to avoid getting on company mailing lists when signing up to a website... all go ugh a real person would change the username on here from “am numbers” to something else - so I’m back to thinking bots, but with no idea of a reason! 😅

EditEditEdit: The only obvious reason (especially in a two player game) is to inflate another player’s XP score - but that was the only game am215146 has played and it was against am215102 ! 🤷‍♂️
