Still a timing problem in multiplayer tournaments

Post by RobertBr »

This tournament, https://boardgamearena.com/tournament?id=68670

is now in its fifth/sixth round. Looking at results it seems well over half the games ended due to time. The tournament is set on 40 hrs per players, so 120 hrs (5 days) for the whole game, which is a little tight if time zones don't sync but not impossible, certainly it doesn't feel like more than half the games should be timing out. Are other players finding this is still a problem with turn based multi-player even after organisers begin to get a sense of how long you need to set the timings for?

The multiplayer mode is great but I feel this represents an unexpected problem that needs to be addressed in some manner.

This one is using 42 hrs per player with fewer tiles https://boardgamearena.com/tournament?id=69433 which is definitely enough time but still seeing the same effect of most games ending due to time.

which is definitely enough time
40h when playing I+C and T+B - 114 tiles - is quite challenging. It's no wonder that players ran into timeout. If you can play only in the evening, you can easily miss the time where all players are online. And if there's a night owl playing before you, you'll get the whole night time on your own clock.

The fact that a lot of games are cancelled because one player ran out of time should tell you that your assessment of "enough" might not be shared by everyone.

I play some duel tournaments, with 5 days per game, and sometimes run into time trouble, too. Mostly on weekends, when I don't want do squat in front of my screen all day long. There's a family, a house, and sometimes even work :o. That's why I never skip a player who's in timeout. Because I don't want to find myself in that position.

I know this thread is a little old but I wanted to weigh in an share my frustration as well. I play all day between 7:30a and 4:00p EST and try to get at least a few turns in before bed and invariably I will wake up to find a tournament game timed out. I put my last turn in on a Carcassonne game at 11 last night and still got booted. Frustrating to put in 8 hours a day only to have one more turn played against me to ruin a perfectly good match.

Problem with multiplayer is you just need 2-3 bad apples and they spoil anything.
We need a KICK-BUTTON and we need to be able to change tourney settings when we perceive, time is to short.

Yes, there probably needs to be a way to exclude players from tournaments as well, though issue is a little bit different to the timing issue.

If you are being frustrated by this please do upvote the suggestion to change it https://boardgamearena.com/bug?id=35289 and encourage others to do the same, its the only way that BGA knows people care about it - and make a point of saying something in the chat of the tournaments you are in (not everyone reads the forums).

Hi, I'm currently in a 64 player tournament with 10 days thinking time. The organizer is now on -10 days and 0 karma. Another game also has 2 players on -2 and -3 days but no movement since 28 of March. What to do? I this a bug?
All other players have finished their games.
Thank you for any opinion on what to do, who to contact(the organizer doesn't answer but is online all the time

You don't need to do anything, the games will time out at the 10 day mark and victory will be awarded based on time.

Thank you, and it did happen like you said. It is my first tournament, and I don't know how everything works yet.

Just finished my first game that was a turn-based tournament game here on BGA, and I have to agree with the sentiments of the lead poster. My game was declared over as "timed out" and I was awarded fourth (last) place because I had used the most time. Another player from USA was next to last. The two players from Europe were first and second (least time). This happened even though I made all my moves promptly, but obviously the fact that I was after a player from Europe in turn order affected my "time" as calculated.\

I checked the other seven games, none of which finished in the time limit (five days). So, either a poor job by the tournament organizer and/or a major flaw in the system for turn-based multiplayer tournaments on BGA. The winner of the tournament should be the person who is best at playing the game, not the luckiest in terms of living in the proper time zone.
