Going nil when your partner goes nil

Post by Holdenbj »

I wonder when you guys think it is appropriate to bid nil if your partner has bid nil. I can only see it as a last ditch move if your opponents have bid like 11 or 12 between them.

It happened to me today (my partner bid nil after I did) and I became very frustrated with my partner. I feel like I had a very solid nil and would have made it, but with no teammate helping me , my nil went down (on a 6C). I will show you our hands.

ME

S:3
H:2,4,8,9,10,K
C:6,J
D:3,4,10,A

PARTNER

S:2,6,8
H:6
C:5,7,K
D:2,5,6,7,8,J

Admittedly, I wasn't loving my diamonds for a nil hand but life always has risks. As it turns out, my partner could have easily covered my hand. Since he had 6 Ds the opponents could never lead to my A. It is possible he might eventually be forced to lead into a 4th diamond trick, but his hand is pretty weak, so he is likely only leading a couple of times.

I may be missing something so I thought I would see what other people think

By the way, the bidding went-

ME: nil
WEST: nil
Partner: nil
EAST: 11

My opponent complained that he didn't think he could take a trick which seems completely foolish. His singleton H is worth at least 1, and his KC is probably going to be good. I think I would have bid 2 in his spot. The 2 could have gone down, but if it does that is only -20 and almost surely some bags for the opponents.

nil after nil is pretty silly, I agree. with no protection 1 of you is almost certainly going to be set. The 3 heart hand with the king certainly means they need to go at least 1 as a nil is likely set by that

I think his nil would be valid and probably makeable- provided you didn’t go nil. He easily could have made either the Kc or trumping hearts. Also it looks like he actually has you covered pretty much guaranteed.

I've seen it work. I've also seen it miserably fail. Take a chance, have fun..
