Early quits by opponents - sad.

Post by bgrasher »

I played 3 games of TM today, and 2 ended with a player leaving. (edited out some garbage about how I was winning, this is irrelevant)

Spending two of my hours on two no results is very discouraging. I love this site, but this is one of the things that is not great.

Constructive feedback:
Can a quitting player auto pass out the rest of the game? Especially in round 6, especially in long games?

Can games with a longer duration give harsher karma penalties?

Can we not lose ELO for "tieing" with the remaining players, can we maybe just get the ELO for beating the person who left, and nothing else matters, since that is the result of the game?

Can we show abandons on the currently played game during setup, in addition to overall karma, and/or have a filter to not play with people that have abandoned this game?

Things that wouldn't work IMO:
We could still give the option to quit with the result of beating the player who is losing, but people clearly losing would have the incentive to just quit themselves and avoid a negative result vs a third party, so I think them passing out, or agreeing to quit are effectively mutually exclusive.

Any other ideas? Both players that quit on the games I was in had perfect displayed karma, and I've ratcheted up my karma requirements, and given them thumbs downs from me, but I can't get those hours back, and I only have so many hours for extracurricular fun outside work and family time...

Edit: capitalized ELO, made the post shorter and to the point, whether I was winning or not is irrelevant.

That is unfortunate.

Sadly it's not really easy/possible to just have players auto pass, and it wouldn't exactly lead to fair finishes in some games either.

I agree that some of the karma penalties for truly dropping could be harsher, especially for longer games.

With all that said, I will say you've also just been a bit unlucky. It's actually pretty rare to have people drop, especially if you initially filter by reputation.

7 of the last 14 games did not have a decisive result.
I'll say I was benefitted in one of those because I was not playing very well, and a couple were quits in the first year, but that leaves 4 more games that were in contention, or where I might have won, and what I got for it was tie ELO (0 rank change) with the other players, and 10 hours of playtime wasted.

I did check the rep of one of the opponents during the game, and it was below 75 even though my threshold is set (It was an arena game, perhaps arena does not respect those settings)

This is really frustrating. I want a game to end one way or the other, I want the feeling of winning a close game, or losing a game and looking what my opponents did better than me.

The way arena works is that it respects your settings for the first couple of minutes of searching and then slowly relaxes them, until after like 10 minutes of waiting or so it just accepts anything. This does mean you can get put in to a game with very low reputation players, even if you have pretty firm restrictions.

This part of things is very annoying--I wish BGA would stop allowing low reputation players in to arena all together, and would allow others to actually enforce restrictions a bit more. But alas.

Outside of that, does seem you've been pretty unlucky lately which is really unfortunate. I can only continue to encourage players to red thumb these players that quit, impact their reputation, and over time you generally should get to play full games.
