Maybe I'm missing something

I tried Splendor yesterday for the first time and I notices something weird in the rules.

The game ends when the first player reaches 15 of prestige and the winner is who has higher prestige. That sounds strange because if that player is the first reaching 15 points he's also the player with higher prestige (maybe an exception occours if he's not he last in that turn and one of the other players can reach him).

In my game I decided to ignore nobles and I tried to reach 15 prestige points only with development cards. Apparently it worked as strategy because I won quickly and without any noble card.

Am I missing something?

That exception happens pretty often. When playing IRL, we frequently had situations where 3 out of the 4 players end up with more than 15 points.

Sometimes it works. Sometimes, it's even the optimal strategy.

Ok, thank you for the clarification, I was a little surprised because I had already 15 points, but the other 3 player had maximum 5 points and apparently they were trying to get nobles

Sometimes it works. Sometimes, it's even the optimal strategy.

I think it's bad because it takes noble's importance away. I hoped noble cards would have been the goal of the game not just something aside
But anyway I think I'll give it a second chance

Yeah, that's unfortunately what happen when peoples are not evenly matched. Even if you're a beginner at Splendor, how much you played at abstract boardgames in general will heavily advantage/disadvantage you.
