Most word games just ignore accents.
"ELEVE" should be accepted in lieu of "ÉLÈVE" (student/pupil) and "ÉLEVÉ" (high/elevated).
Linking the words written to their entries in an online dictionary can be slightly tricky because of that.

But the letter distribution really is different. Especially for H, K, W and Y.
That's 4 letters that would really become annoying at their current costs and benefits.
There are also letters that are much more likely to be next to one another in one or the other language which can be significant for this game.

You also have to decide what kind of words are acceptable.
Some word games accepts all conjugated forms of the verbs but many don't.
I would limit verbs to the infinitive and past participle (with also the plural and female forms of the past participle if the verb is transitive)

Here is a quick rundown of letters occurrence.
I computed this by using the 12dicts (3outof6game) for English and one version of the gutenberg list for French.
I kept only words between 5 and 12 letters.
Note that the French list does include conjugated verbs which has a significant impact on some letters (most notably, it increases the occurrence of "z")

The game owner is unlikely to appreciate a poor port to French.

Thanks for this game. I've been enjoying the solitaire version.

I would love to see an alternate setting for solitaire (and cooperative) in which the game ends ONLY when Penny Dreadful reaches 60 points, and not when the player does. That way the object is to try for the highest possible score when time runs out, rather than just win or lose against Penny.

Comparing speed record (the number of turns taken) will suffice in that case.

Thanks for this game, it's really good!

Re French translation of the game, I wouldn't play it myself, however it's definitely a great idea! Agree with what others have posted about taking the same approach that scrabble does.

Each player has their own personal deck of letter cards, using them to spell words, gain coins and prestige, and acquire new cards. The twist here is that any card can be wild. There's also a challenging solo/co-operative mode.

Give it a try today: https://boardgamearena.com/gamepanel?game=hardback
On the topic of dictionaries, where did you get 12dicts from? I am not sure how to say this politely, but I think this is the worst dictionary I have ever seen in use in a word game and I have been playing them a lot for a very long time.

I had all of
https://scrabblecheck.com/perianth
https://scrabblecheck.com/senhorita
https://scrabblecheck.com/hortensia
https://scrabblecheck.com/planisher
disallowed which are perfectly fine in scrabble (and other games like Countdown). Particularly strange for perianth and hortensia which are botanical terms I'd expect to be in any dictionary worth its salt.

There's plenty of discussion about the English dictionaries in the Hardback forum, and in the "how to play" section of the game page. Long story short, you have the option to choose another dictionary when creating/joining a table if you so prefer.
