Damn is not an Offensive Word in English

Not being a Victorian of high moral standing, the word damn is no longer considered even mildy offensive, and is often used in place of words which are much "stronger" (if you give credence to the whole nonsense). I appreciate that BGA is attempting to prevent and have robust systems against bad behaviour. But being threatened with moderation on the use of inoffensive words, when it is completely possible to say highly offensive things in chat without offending the filter. Can the word list be reviewed by a moderate and sensible panel of English speaking people?

I was playing with a friend yesterday and the pace of chat was steady and friendly. I announced I was ready to solve the case but, alas, I tripped over my own logic. I looked back through my work and reported, "Ah, I think I realize now where I made my goof."

Instantly the sirens blared, the searchlights swept down from the chopper, and the textbox saying "Insults ? Aggressive behavior ?? (etc., etc.)" popped up.

Such was my instant education that "goof" can be added to the list of troublesome words.

Technically 'damn' can be framed to be offensive. For example 'damn your hide you mud scraping weasel, I'll never play with you again' would, if not taken as deliberate self-parody, probably be offensive. All the box is doing is saying 'I'm a very dumb computer but sometimes that word can appear aggressive, are you sure you want to use it' - it leaves the actual decision to a smart human being, you.

Or even better, just be removed as it serves no purpose and does not work at all for other languages.

Contexutally Damn is much more often used in the context of regret in modern English, such as "Damn I forgot to prompt people to compain about aggressive behvaiour which they themselves didn't see as agressive until I prompted them"

Even in the more commonly used "Damn you, I wish I'd done that", it can hardly be said to be agreessive, the use of an older word is used to show that the phrase is a "jokey" complaint, rather than a call on God to send you to hell.

To provide a contrary perspective, I respectfully disagree with the original poster.

In many English-speaking communities where I live in the United States, the word is still consider profanity. It would not be tolerated in many public schools. I feel like that's a fantastic standard in this case.

There are billions of English speakers. While it may not be offensive in your community, or in your cultural bubble, I disagree that it is universally accepted as an un-offensive term.
