Great Western Trail - Points

Post by atcblake »

I’m currently testing the alpha version of GWT and so far it has been very smooth. My one piece of feedback thus far though is to not show the total points each player has. One of the things I enjoy about GWT is that you might have an idea of how many points players have based on what they do during the game, but there’s no point tracker in the physical version which shows you exactly where they stand. I feel like for less experienced gamers seeing JUST how far behind they are can be very discouraging.

Both points of view are understandable. I suppose better players are likely to be more competitive, but newer ones might find it useful to see how certain moves affect the score. Some games bring enormous surprises (good and bad) when the scores are totted up at the end. Could it be an option of some sort in the settings?

Having played Beyond the Sun both online and physical, I appreciate knowing how well I'm doing throughout the game. I don't think it's particularly demoralizing, and it's not as if beginner players will have an expectation of keeping pace with an expert player.

In my physical games of GWT, sometimes the winner is surprising. Will showing the score during the game cause some additional AP and trying to maximize every turn? Probably -- and maybe that will encourage players to play more competitively.

Could this be an optional feature?
