Rules question: exile

Hi. I am just wondering something. When you get a card that says "exile this card to gain a compass" or something like that, does this only work when you click on it or does it work if you exile it indirectly, like for example using the exile reward on the research track. Hope this makes sense.

I'm pretty sure that you need to play it as an action for the effect to work. It does not trigger when you exile it by any other mean.
