Moderated/Moderators

Post by MisterTab »

Hello Moderators
I don’t know how to start so I tell the story:
I have been moderated for the sentences: ‘You didn’t say anything’ and ‘You’re Rubbish as always’. These two sentence where reported ( one sentence is for 100% legal no doubt). I don’t used big swear words and I’m not insulting someone rude. Maybe it’s provoking but rubbish has the same line as you’re not clever. But alright.

For this report I get a 3 days chatban and low karma!!!!!!! This is my point. I don’t used swear words and only that’s enough for giving 3 days chatban. And people who used STFU or insulting people gets a warning. How will you explain this to bga-players? The moderators are using different standards for punish people and really that’s removes the fun from BGA.

My previous moderation (Funny I said in Dutch: ‘what a mongoloid’ referring to people of Mongolia) was also a shame moderation. Because no one of the moderators can speak Dutch. Second I send an email to explain the words and why I’m not agree with the punishment. (I have never get an email back with an answer. And I hear for more people they get never an reaction. So an objection is not in considering). And last, I get a punishment on 5 june (I believe but I can’t see my report because they are removed :’)) and I had a chatban for 3 days but it’s ends on 10 june. so I get a 5 days penalty. That’s was also unfair.
So what I want to say is moderators stop with using for different standard for punishment because it’s feels unfair and takes the pleasure from this side. Use more different moderators with different languages. And make the objection easier for people.

I looking forward to an answer.

Mister Tab.

How you can objectively compare moderation situations without knowing the whole extent and previous history ?

And both your moderations seems well deserved from my point of vue, I don't understand why you would even try to object the judgements in the first place.

I'm not at all offended by someone swearing in a chat, esp if it's not targeted, but I would feel 'You're rubbish, as always' was pretty nasty. And your unfunny 'joke' about a Mongolian being a mongoloid would be offensive n any language.

Moderation is a hard job, especially on a site where some people enjoy trash talk at games tables, and I agree there are sometimes inconsistencies in severity of punishment. But the easiest way to do that is just to err on the side of caution and not say things people are likely to be upset by, not to require a whole list of potential insults and appropriate punishments to be set out somewhere on this site.

This must be a troll post, right? Or did you actually write this with a straight face?

Dutch is my native language and there is approximately 0% chance of using that term as "a person living in Mongolia" in a random conversation, let alone with a stranger on the internet. Your argument doesn't even make sense in English, since it's basically the same thing. An equally ridiculous statement would be "I totally wasn't calling him a derogatory term for gay people, I was comparing him to a cigarette! Many laughs were had."

Consider your moderation reviewed and approved by a Dutch speaker, as requested. And it may well have been an aggravating factor for your current penalty, which I personally would have let go with a warning, had it not been for the previous incident.

What do you mean with the first alinea? Oke i can life with the moderations but 3 a days ban for simple sentences (mongolia was my first moderation every for rude behaviour). That is insane. (Rubbish and mongolai are bigger swear words then stuur, stupid, dump, one braincell people?) Give me a warning or one day ban. And i reported people for worse (and often) and they get a warning! That's my point.

Moderations are good but not for simple things

You seem to have missed the point and conveniently ignored the rest of my post. What I'm saying is: I speak Dutch and can attest to the fact your objection to the first report was "rubbish" and the moderator handled it correctly.

Also, the moderation policy explicitly states that unconvincing emails will be ignored: https://boardgamearena.com/doc/Moderationpolicy#Appeal (though I do think it would be better to just reply with a standard "your argument has been rejected")

Your second offense might be less severe, but it was still a direct insult, and since you got reported, it was probably not taken jokingly.

A 3 day chat ban is considered a light punishment and likely also served as your warning, since it was already a pretty serious insult for a first offense. Not long after that, you directly insult someone again, showing that your behaviour hasn't changed much. It's only logical that the penalty is then more severe than what a first offender would get.

There is no table with all possible insults along with their objective punishments. That's not how any justice system works. If you run a red light, you might get a serious fine. If you then do it again within a month, and you've also racked up a load of speeding tickets, you're probably going to lose your license.

And of course, some judges are just more strict than others, but to be honest, you really can't complain.

First moderation = warning.
Second moderation = 3days ban.

That's as simple as that. They don't differenciate minor things and major things with that, but I think it's a commun approach for website and video games. You have two cases: permaban if the insult is absolutely atrocious (which is rare), or those steps.

Can confirm, even in Flemish [Belgium-Dutch) there is no real valid reason to use the term, unless you were actually involved with someone with the Mongolian nationality.

Possibly, if a moderator can't understand the concept, he may have had a second opinion on the matter from a friend who does speak Dutch. We won't ever know ofcourse, but I doubt that a moderator would judge you if the message was unclear that it was not certain it was used in a bad way.

We are not going to agree i think. I still by opion that moderators has different standards. But hopefully moderators will read this and they gonna thinking about it. (I'm afraid they don't because they still silent and don't take there responsibility).
