Secret Alpha Games

Post by Pipernation22 »

I agree that it was the right move to lock the GWT thread as, clearly, they aren't asking for testers. However, with no desire to incite a riot, I am curious about this. People are saying that Jamie S. is giving advice on how to get invited for Tapestry pre-alpha, and on the Maracaibo forums on BGA, a guy says he fell back in love with GWT by playing it on BGA.

So the games are here, and people are playing them, but only some people. This is all fine, I'm just genuinely curious about how this works and what the proper mode of communication WOULD be if I wanted to request an invitation (if there is a proper channel at all).

No proper channel. That's basically the whole point of secret alpha, it's secret.

A big part of it is how the developer would like to proceed with the Alpha testing and where they advertise the Private Alpha or how they limit the included group in the testing.

The other side is I am sure there are people that know the right channels to get into the Individual Private Alphas but they are holding back on commenting else it will be a flood of questions for them while they are not the lead developer on the project.

Again, no right channels, that's the whole point. You can get in basically only if you have the right contacts, either with publisher or dev(s). And as someone in the private alpha, i wouldn't say that I am in the private alpha anyway, because, you know, it's secret..
There are been couple exceptions with GWT (mainly for licenses reasons AFAIK) and Tapestry (not sure why it was not public alpha), but for the other ones it was/is a real private stuff, as probably intended by bga admins.

I'd like to add some comments on this as well as a developer (not involved in GWT or Tapestry), specifically to address the bad feelings players may have about not being able to access a game. First I should correct some terminology that may be contributing to these feelings. The process is not referred to as "Secret Alpha". I can't speak to every project, but generally the developers aren't trying to make some exclusive club that you can only get into if you have the right connections. The whole reason that so much time and effort is going into developing and testing the game is so that everyone will be able to play it at some point. "Pre-Alpha" has a different meaning, and refers to the period of time when the game is under development and is not being tested by others. The term that BGA uses for this process is "Private Alpha".

There are multiple reasons that a game will be in private alpha:

The content of the game belongs to the publisher, and the publisher has the right to exercise control over the time and manner of its public release. As with Splendor, it's possible that GWT might pass over Beta and go straight to stable release, which makes for better press.

Alpha and Beta testing are different things, with different expectations of testers and a different level of attention paid to reports. Almost every game module on BGA is developed by a single person, who might only have a few hours per week available. It is a much better use of their time to fix bugs and improve the implementation, rather than wade through pages of duplicate and non-bug reports, or respond to an onslaught of messages from people who want access. It is best to keep the signal to noise ratio as high as possible.

For Alpha, testers should understand how BGA works and what causes may underlie the unexpected behavior so they can submit a useful report to the right channel. It's much more useful if Alpha testers play in ways to try to break the implementation and find bugs, rather than playing competitively. More testers does not necessarily equal better testing, and being enthusiastic about the game does not mean you will be helpful to the Alpha testing process.

During Beta, the process for very popular games relies on the wisdom of the crowd to prioritize issues via the voting system for bug reports. Inevitably, the general public will report duplicates of bugs that have already been reported, report non-bugs that stem from a misunderstanding of the rules, or ignore legitimate bugs, or post them in places they cannot be tracked.

As Tisaac said, there isn't a secret forum or channel you can find and post in that will change any of the above. The only thing accomplished by repeatedly asking, or finding different and more intrusive ways to ask, is taking time away from the developing and testing process. Please be patient, and let the developer(s) work on the game.

This is all genuinely insightful and I want to thank people for not having posts that drip with scathing sarcasm. I'm new to reviewing and have no experience developing. I think from my side of things, I would hope that the people working on this can also see the repeated asking as an excitement and appetite for what they're developing. But the explanation of the process is more easily understood with your posts and I thank you for the time spent replying.

+1 for the "private". Many games were onced in private alpha to organize playtesting with publishers for instance.

Also, on players expectative : alpha, public or not, is NOT an early access to the game !! As paramesis said, the job of reviewer can be quite different to a "normal" player

I don't want to come across as discouraging those who want to contribute to BGA by Alpha testing upcoming titles. The situation does vary quite significantly from game to game, and much of what I described applies to already well-known games from large publishers. The BGA admins are in a difficult position in having to figure out how to create a testing system that works fairly for different circumstances to produce a consistent and improving level of quality for adaptations on the platform.

There are a lot of smaller projects that are desperately seeking more help with testing, and are stuck in public Alpha because there aren't enough qualified reviewers around to play complete games and give approvals. Joining those groups and participating in testing can really help smaller publishers and encourage new developers.

I dont know why people would get bent out of shape about not being able to play these alpha games.

I wasnt aware that some of them were locked. I was trying to figure out why i couldnt see these games initially.

I imagine that they are locked because theyre not very playable at the moment. So i never bothered to ask. The games will make their way on here eventually so why all the fuss?

Just being impatient.
Pre-alpha is not really a fully functioning game but a prototype.
Those guys won't get what they want even if they join the group, and usually don't help the process much either.
