Strange Avatar Selection

I did some looking around and I could not find any real info on it so I thought I would see if anyone had any idea where there incredibly eclectic selection of avatars on this site comes from. It is just so all over the place, a lot of it is absolutely copy-written, some of it looks like it may be explicit but it is just cut so you do not see that part. It is as though someone did an image scrape of a random google image search and called that the avatar selection.

I did some poking at the network calls being made and it does look like the images are hosted on a BGA server and that the api calls being made to get them are to BGA servers so I am just curious where these are all coming from.

I also criticised the BGA-offered avatars, because I consider them weird in a bad way, and kind of disturbing. No feedback, of course.
I am a bit surprised that there are not more complaints about the avatars, to be frank...

Before, people didn't even have that option.
They could have either not select anything, or set a pic from their computer (which was/is the best option, in my opinion).
