What time zone does BGA use

Post by Mazarin26 »

I don't know what hours to set for a game because I don't know if the hours are according to my time zone, or some other time zone. If the hours are according to my time zone, how does everyone know what my time zone is?
Also I was not allowed to choose the 24 hour option.

The playing hours are shown to each player in their own timezone.

Thank you for the answer. Is there anywhere on BGA that this is written down? And how do they tell what my time zone is? This could be problem for some people there are four different time zones in this country, and the usual geolocation spot listed for our server is more than 1000km away. It would be good to be more transparent about this.

Its important, because if I time out because I have joined a game that has play time while I am asleep, everyone gets annoyed, including me.

Was there ever any follow up on this? Thanks for asking this question.

The javascript function getTimeZoneOffset(), which I am assuming the site uses (or something similar), references what the machine thinks the local time is. So it doesn't matter if someone is in time zone 1, connects to the internet on a server in time zone 2, and is asking BGA's servers (in time zone 3) what time the event is. BGA's servers will say it is in (BGA time + [difference between time zone 3 and time zone 1])

On the whole website, the time displayed to you must be your.
Whenever you see "5PM", it must be your 5PM (ie: you don't have to worry about timezones if you computer is setup correctly).
Exactly as Jest Phulin said, it's all linked to your own timezone.

So whenever someone is looking at the time displayed, it shows something different, depending on his location and timezone.
When i see 7PM (in Paris, France), inhabitants of New York will see 1PM.

Easy ;)

I still don't understand the times listed in tournaments. Example there is a listing saying start time 16:00(New York/America) then right below it are playing hours from 4:00 to 16:00. Why would the tournament start at an hour when playing time ends. Are the playing hours at a different time zone?

This is because the tournament creator made a strange choice. There are two separate inputs for creation: "start time" and "playing hours." They are independent from each other. Moves can be made outside of playing hours, it's just that the clock won't run for players outside of that time.

But, as you can see from what you quoted, the time zone listed is New York/America. This is because the computer you viewed the times in believes it is in that time zone.
