I play a lot of dice forge arena. I try to maximize my time when playing by making games as short as possible. I recently have gotten into the habit of conceding as soon as I realize I am in an unwinnable position. I just had someone scold me saying it is bad form to concede before scoring. Granted it was literally my last turn in the game, but I realized there was nothing I could do to win. I have also conceded turn 5/9 because I likewise realized I was in an unwinnable position.
What do you guys think? Am I showing poor form? I treat it like chess. It would be bad manners to continue playing when you know you have lost in chess. Conceding should be the model form when playing arena but that's my opinon.
(1) It depends on waiting time. I'd be quite pissed if after 10min of waiting, the game ended in 5min because of an early conceding from the other player. Last time I've checked Dice Forge, waiting time were quite low so that's not a concern here.
(2) To compare to chess, imagine the following: You're in a competition in which, after every chess game, the arbiter has a small talk where he congratulates the winner, and show to everyone what exactly was at the core of their victory. Unless one player conceded, in which case this congratulation phase is skipped and the winner only has a small paper with the result. You'd probably understand if some players were pissed at their adversary conceding, since it stoles their ceremony. While other players would be glad of having their opponent concede, since they consider this ceremony is a waste of time.
[In case that's not clear, the "ceremony" here is when all the cards bought are slowly revealed]
(3) A lot of peoples don't play arena with a truly "competitive mind". They still play for the game itself. And some peoples truly enjoy the end of a winning game. They have the satisfaction of playing with an engine that runs perfectly. To take another comparison, here with sports: In the case of a Marathon (and assuming only the first place matters), should the competition stop as soon as every player but one has conceded (assuming one player clearly first), or should the remaining player be allowed to continue up until the finish line to see how well they did (comparatively to their other tries)?
I see where you're coming from, but I also understand why others would be pissed of. We're kind of in a case of cultural misunderstanding, as peoples come from different micro-cultures (usual from their IRL boardgame group) and disagree on what is good form / bad form.
When I play IRL, the unwritten convention we have in our micro-culture is that the clear loser signifies through off-comments that they don't think they still have a chance to win (or to improve their ranking, if there is more than 2p), and the
winner is the one to suggest "Shall we stop here then?" once they consider they were fulfilled enough by this winning game.
