why 3rd place gave MORE prestige than 1st and 2nd ?

This is a guess, but it could be based on the number of players when the prestige is gained.

IE, if I am first place in a group of 10, second place in a group of 50, and third place in a group of 6,000, I am in the top 10%, top 4%, and top 0.05% respectively. The absolute value (1st, second, third) doesn't reflect accurately the prestige.

Precisely. Old trophies have never been replaced yet.

Exactly, it was less difficult to be 1st when you became 1st, than to become 3rd when you became 3rd. This is why you got more XP.
