I don't think this an insult word

Post by My name is Friday »

I have been enjoying the game Bang! on BGA, however I noticed that when I say the name of one of the characters, Willy The Kid, the system flags me as saying a potential insult. I live in North America and Willy is not an insult here. Is Willy an insult somewhere else in the English-speaking world? If not, could it be removed from the potential insult list, please?

Not sure about America or other English-speaking countries, but here in the UK "willy" is common slang for, er, a certain male organ.

I don't consider it insulting, although I guess it could be used in a derogatory way to describe someone - but then so can almost any other word. It mostly comes across as a silly, slightly childish, word and is most often used light-heartedly.

I can't do anything about it but any list of "banned" words is going to be a bit of a blunt instrument - this does seem to be going a bit too far but I can't tell you what criteria BGA use or whether it's possible to remove some words. I hope you get a response from admins but one can never be sure!

A penis. A perfectly normal biological part of our body.

Indeed. Apologies for my instinctive British prudishness which believes such words are not fit for polite conversation :D

Your nickname might be potential insult too - from some point of view.

I find a lot of the language that gets flagged as needlessly restrictive. I would love it if there was a way to relax the filter, especially for people on your friends list

Just add your vote to the big pile of people who want this incredibly annoying filter gone, but have sadly been ignored for years: https://boardgamearena.com/bug?id=9903

why does it matter that its flagged ?? :D
you can still post it, with no consequences, as long it wasnt an targeted insult to anyone...

(using damn, like in the meme "daaammn" a lot or calling my self idiot if i fuck up in team games where i shouldnt have, seemed fine until now, even if i get the warning message every time...)

Because it's annoying, mostly incorrect (in non-English languages always incorrect), and quite frankly meddling and pedantic.

Yup, nothing wrong with the word "damn" itself, but rather whom it is directed to.

'Damn you' is obviously no good, and 'Damn it' refers often to some kind of deity, which is also a difficult situation not to offend anyone. But you can damn yourself. I prefer "Dang", "Dangit" or "Darn". But it might sound better for me personally as English isn't my native language.

No one would report your "Damn" if the context is clear, but if it isn't clear, be careful with it.

Context is key. same like saying things like "Willy".
