Turn-based arena table creation

Post by Espina »

I generally like to have several turn-based table of the same game going on arena, and I presume other people do too, because I've been finding that too often, I'll get matched with the same opponent on multiple tables. In fact at the moment I am simultaneously playing 4 (or more?) games of Takenoko against the same person.

Are other people also experiencing this? And do people agree or am I alone in feeling that the experience would be better if simultaneous games were with different opponents?

Just curious, how are you signing up for your multiple games?

If you are initiating 4 games back-to-back, rather than 1 game every 6 hours for 1 full day, the table-matching algorithm has little choice but to place you at the same tables as someone else seeking 4 tables at once. The oldest open tables contain the other person.

By spreading out when you join tables you have a better chance of being matched with different people.

Afaik there is no way to initiate games back to back. I'm definitely spreading out when I join tables.

That being said, the table matching algorithm checks to see various preferences like do I want to play with people at the same level or anyone and what time settings I want to play. It's just as easy to check whether I'm already playing with someone.

If the admins do not want to implement something like this, I completely understand and respect that. However, they did mention that they are tweaking the table matching algorithm this season, so I merely offer this as a suggestion.

An algorithm never has a choice. That's an inherent characteristic of an algorithm.

Who does have a choice is the programmer who develops the algorithm, who could choose what to avoid and what not. Sounds like a doable thing: an option to avoid players you already play with like it's done with other levels / time settings and such.

But here's just so much cool stuff that *could* be implemented and I totally understand this nice-to-have is not the most important thing to do first

Maybe you can put a red thumb (personal opinion, not the general one) to players you currently play with to avoid being matched with them. Then you can undo the red thumb when the game is over on the table.
Of course that's imperfect: you don't have game specificity because I think it will temporarily prevent to be match with these players for any game & it requires a bit of work on your side. However, it may do the trick for you, at least for now.

Red Thumbs don't apply in arena iirc

Wrong
Interesting, I also thought that red thumbs don't apply in arena.

Still, giving red thumbs, even just the personal ones does not feel right in this context.
