Ranking based on remaining time

Post by Soliloquy_ »

So, I'm playing in my first tournament and one of the other players didn't play in the allotted time and forced the game result to be based on remaining time for each player.

This really doesn't seem like a fair way to rank. I was doing fairly well in the game and may not have ranked 3rd had the game completed naturally.

Is any consideration being given to an alternate method? Who, in charge, would I mention this to? Or is this just a recognized and accepted unfairness and I should be sure to avoid tournaments that play as early as 3am, my local time, since I don't wake up that early?

It is the fairest and most equitable way to resolve the issue. Most players want it to be applied more broadly and to eliminate the option of one player skipping the turns of others.

I don't think it's fair at all, at least in some situations. I had a game where 3/4 players had completed the game, and the remaining player, who would have lost, got credited the win. Surely if the game has progressed a certain % of the way the game could be decided on current score.

Much like OP I guess I shouldn't have signed up for a tournament that played overnight my time :?

EDIT: Maybe some thought could also be given to not giving/taking ELO points in this situation as well

While the timing out of a game during tournament play is reasonably frequent, I feel like the current solution is the one least able to be abused.

for example if you use leader of game after x turns it is too easy for a player to not take a turn if they meet the conditions to win. What this is basically doing is adding a victory condition. To win this game of 7 wonders be the leader after the second age then wait out the play time.

I have not experienced players intentionally playing slow, I have however been kicked from a game where I was slow player, only an hour or 2 in the red, and I was currently leading the game. I don't put that much emphasis on winning games, but I know plenty of people with a win at all cost, if the system allows me to do it then the it's a legit strategy, the rules don't say I can't do it mentality.

My only other thought in this is, Maybe of it was combined with a possible to force a player to make their move in "game x" before they were able to move in "game y" then it puts a higher penalty on a player who is intentionally not playing, making the scenario above less likely.

I was in a 4 player game , player 3 didn't make a move so player 4 got the win purely because they hadn't used up any of their time yet...

I've also seen a number of games where people have used the least time, and so don't even try and finish game, but let clock run down. especially on 2/3 player tournament matches

Hi. This is the 2nd similar topic I read and I don't understand something.
How it is possible to win by waiting if the remaining time is the factor to win? Doesn't waiting player lose their time by waiting?
How come they have more remaining time than the others?

If the thinking time difference is smaller than the remaining time for that round. Because one of the players is way over time but the others have used quite a bit of time as well.
Check out the Allround-League: https://boardgamearena.com/group?id=7870115 --> a league where you have matches of random games vs. other players in your group. Season 9 registration oct. '25.

If I've used 10 hours thinking time (because I was asleep), and they've only used 2 hours thinking time, if the game will automatically end in 6 hours, then even if they don't make a move, their total thinking time would be 8 hours which is less than my 10 hours.
