Complainers tend to be vocal. Supporters not so much.
As far as how it is an upgrade, the gameplay is improved with the expansions. Additionally, in the physical game, all colors have unique meeple shapes, making it more colorblind friendly. BGA from the beginning has stated that they are trying to make the experience as close to the physical game as possible.
