Since a few are in agreement for a suggested change, I have created a bug report for the suggestion. Please vote if you feel this is something the developers should consider:

Personally, I agree with Jeronimon. The easiest and least complex seems to just have a total figures killed. Basically, you're using a tie breaker that counts the total number of hits you attained against your opponent.
I don't think you will find a definitive answer based on what other tournaments do. Some tournaments count total figures killed, some count figures remaining, some don't count figures at all (these are generally not elimination tournaments).
So it boils down to just having a standard here that is consistent and relaying that standard to players so everyone knows what it is and knows how to achieve it.

I don’t know if you’ve been to Memoir '44 tournaments in real life, but for those I’ve been to, the tables were only provided with the strictly necessary game components to play the scenario.
During a game, the total of the figures present on the hexagons of the board added to the total of the figures present off the board and on the medal slots is therefore always the same for all tables playing the same scenario.
Counting the figures on the hexes of the board or counting the figures resulting from the losses, this is exactly the same thing as the 2 accounts are deducted from each other.

I've been to a few of the major tournaments in real life (including organizing one of my own) and really enjoy them!
Yes, both manners of counting are very similar and provide almost the same result.
The main point I was making is that different tournaments value figures killed different ways. Very important for some tournaments, such as elimination tournaments where a tie breaker is needed. Not so much for others, such as a Swiss Round tournament where players are guaranteed a number of games.
For an online game where a winner needs to be decided the figure count is fine for a tie breaker, but to be completely honest I'm not a huge fan of it. It's strictly an attritional statistic (which I understand played a huge part in battles). But it's dependent on dice. It doesn't reward the player who strategically took objectives, rotated weakened units to the rear for protection, or played his hand of poor cards exceedingly well.
That's why for tournament play, I prefer the Swiss Round system and giving bonuses for taking objective medals. The winner is generally the player who plays the best over the course of the scenarios and allows for an overly lucky or unlucky game to be somewhat cancelled out due to the number of games played. Figures never come into play as a tiebreaker as there are other calculations that can be made at that point.
But all this to say, I love Memoir and will play it no matter the tie breaker or no matter the tournament style! I'm thrilled with the implementation on BGA and look forward to lots of battles and lots of tournaments with many new players!
Good luck and have fun everyone, and see you on the battlefield regardless of what the tie breaker will be

I agree with you: some tournament rules do not require counting figures at the end of the game.
However, if a tournament organizer on BGA requires the count of figures, it bothers me to have a figures account that could not be realized in a real game. Because at the end of a real game, players consider the final situation, while the history of the game is ignored, because it would take too much time to consider the history.

Agreed! If the tournament organizers use figures as a tie breaker there should be an easy and consistent way to count them!

(snip)
As I mentioned before, the French tournament rules that I consulted plan to count the remaining figurines on the board.
So, if an infantry unit lost 2 figures, then recovered 2 figures with Medics & Mechanics, you get the same count with an unit which has suffered no loss.
I like this - simply because it makes the M&M card slightly stronger (since you can actually turn a losing situation around with it now) and that's honestly not a bad thing, IMO. It's both a risky and an often pretty weak card in Memoir44

To take the contrary view, the count of units hit (figures "killed") is all the figures destroyed in the battle.
A figure has to have been destroyed before it can be restored and therefore should still count in the total of figures destroyed.
The count of figures destroyed should never go down.
If figures are destroyed they are counted even if they are subsequently restored/healed.

The figures or vehicles brought back by the M&M card are not replacements but the same figures brought back from a still surviving unit not a destroyed unit
