I also leave the browser open and logged in to BGA. I'm fairly sure that makes it appears others as though I am always "online". I doubt the BGA website can determine whether we are "looking" at the page or not.

Do you need to be alerted by text message? You said you checked 1-2 times a day. Whenever you open any BGA page, the orange clover shaped icon near the top right will show a red number of you have any games where it is your turn.

And, if your game timer was 24 hours, don't wait for an alert; just check every 16 hours.

Or, use a vacation joker. Or, don't start games before a vacation.

And, yes, as Jellby noted, if you exceed your time against someone who is losing, that player might kick you from the game.

This cannot possibly be surprising to anyone, can it?

WOULD LOVE... constructive, yet honest feedback. Anecdotal tidbits of your experiences... They that kicked me from Vale of Eternity to let me know why, and why they didn't check in first, anyone else who has thoughts or missives... reply here or DM me, just be civil and polite and I will do the same, always. Hi, tournament host here. Looks like you are referring to this game: https://boardgamearena.com/table?table=701629598 i'll give my thoughts.

A slow moving game overall in part due to having 3p with players from 3 opposite locations, USA, UK, AUS. Those are always tough to finish because its hard to get the whole table online together. Regardless, 120 hours thinking time (15 days) is pretty generous for 3p Vale of Eternity so I would prefer not to go any slower for game duration since that would slow down tournaments so much. There are no options between 15 days and 30 days so the difference would be brutal.

Looks like you made many of the moves quite fast, but you had a few periods of 16-20 hour thinking time on a single move, meaning you were likely away for longer than that while it was someone else's turn. If you were able to make a move every 8-10 hours you would have been fine.

The game was approaching 13 days when you were skipped which is quite long for 3p Vale of Eternity, not entirely your fault since you were only -11h when you were skipped. I would have liked to see the game continue so you could have a chance to reach 10 points to advance into finals.

Other games in the same stage in the tournament ran to completion despite 1 player going over time. I found other games that ended around 10- 12 days like https://boardgamearena.com/table?table=701622598&nr and https://boardgamearena.com/table?table=701625598&nr

It would have been nice to let you continue playing, but I am also not upset with the player skipping you since the game was dragging out so long.

For 3+ player tournaments I prefer to allow skips as the lesser evil for how to handle an incomplete game. I think a 3-3-0 score split with the overtime player getting 0 is more fair than the alternative which is players unable to skip and game results decided by thinking time. I would personally be upset to get 2nd place and 2 points in a game I was winning because 1 player used less time than me and the 3rd player is playing too slow.

BGA does not allow me any options other than skips allowed or no skips so the best I can do is allow skips and set the game duration to a very generous 15 days, 120 hours per player.

I have not played Vale of Eternity, though it does look interesting.

Good question, typically 20 “turns” in a 3p game. 2 to 3 turns per round for 7-9 rounds.

20 turns over 120 hours is 6 hours thinking time per turn.

I host 8 Vale tournaments per month. There is a monthly Casual cup for 0-199 Elo I would recommend. I haven’t made it yet, will soon. Starts Aug 16. It would be great if you could join us

Ok, so each player makes 20 turns. This is not a long game.

So, with regard to the main topic at hand - If someone cannot complete 20 moves with a 120-hour clock .... I don't see an issue with one of the opponents kicking that player from the game.

I got a Faraway friend into Vale last month and they immediately climbed to 300 Elo with some basic tips and my secret tier list. It’s a fun game and you can shortcut a lot of trial and error by using a mix of playing and studying.

Trip was unplanned weeks ago when I joined the tournament.
Checked in twice, took turns twice in 30 hours.... not gone for days.
Have only had like ONE person comment back during games, so I'm not sure how attitude can come into play.
Understand that direct, rules following is expected = out of time, kick, for win/not loss, suck it, it's the rules.
Will still not kick people, regardless of who is winning, as that is pretty lame imho. I play games for fun... winning is a bonus for strong play.
Forgot about Time Jokers... again, NEW to tournaments. Will use in the future.

Good luck, see you next time. Please note that Time Jokers DO NOT WORK for tournaments. They give you a vacation break for Play mode and Arena turn based only.

Skipping is pretty rare in the Vale tournaments. Considering the number of players and games I do not hear much about it. Players are pretty good sports overall.

Agreed. I have never kicked anyone during a turn-based game. I had one opponent disappear for 19 days. Hadn't logged in, hadn't moved in any other games either. 4 games total were in progress, one against me, 3 against other players.

Eventually, one person in one of the other games kicked this ghosted player, but in my game and the other 2 games, we just waited. The person eventually returned, and then started making moves very quickly.

Some sort of emergency likely arose.

Now, if I see someone going ten days into deficit in my game while also making moves in other games, that's different. I would message the person and say, "please make a move in our game."
