Re: Asking for turn based

And what if the person playing against you doesn't have time to play later? Or even just doesn't like playing turn-based? What is their option?
So all this text to end up saying that, even in the worst possible case imaginable, OP should still take the penalty and get kicked out.lefalaf wrote: ↑14 August 2026, 06:59 If your life has that many interruptions that you truly cannot ignore, then perhaps RT is not for you. Or you need to wait for times when you know you'll be uninterrupted for longer than you are currently estimating.
If a friend comes by, ask them to wait for a few minutes, or chat while you play. They interrupted you in your example, no reason other players should suffer.
Phone/text/chat, let it go to voice mail / delay a response, or tell the person that you'll call them back, or quickly chat while you play, or ask the other players if they could forgo booting you because you need 5 minutes for a true, true emergency. And make sure you do not abuse this.
Don't play if you are expecting an urgent call.
etc.
And finally if it's something like a death in the family, fire, injury, then take the small karma hit and rebuild later, which isn't hard. And these hopefully are super rare, but I don't know your situation of course.
You can ask for turned based, but it shouldn't be expected that people accept it.tbhp wrote: ↑14 August 2026, 10:54So all this text to end up saying that, even in the worst possible case imaginable, OP should still take the penalty and get kicked out.lefalaf wrote: ↑14 August 2026, 06:59 If your life has that many interruptions that you truly cannot ignore, then perhaps RT is not for you. What is the point of the switch to turn based feature if, according to you, there is never a good reason to use it?
I perceive the issue is the OP coming across as unsympathetic because of the wording of the original post. [My responses in brackets].
And it has been answered many times over. The short version is: because they don't want to. Surely their opinions matter as much as your own? And yet you still seem to think that what you want is the most important thing, and alllll these other people just don't know it:
And I'll just reiterate that this whole thread sounds like a lesson--several lessons now, actually--that you're not picking up on. First, if your life is full of so many interruptions that this happens "on quite a number of occasions", then maybe you should reconsider the wisdom of real-time games. (Or just accept the penalties with grace instead of complaining they're not your fault.) And second, other players have opinions, and if the overwhelming majority (you said 90%?) disagree with you, then maybe you should reconsider your opinion, or just accept the difference with grace instead of complaining about those other players.
They didn't even say to ask, they said "and if worst comes to worst, then in that case... you still don't ask and you take the penalty". Which makes me wonder why they wrote all this text about what they can do to prevent those situations from happening, if even in the worst of cases they are still gonna get punished anyway. Seems very insensitive.
I agree that OP probably could do more to handle their issues. But what is the point of telling them to try to behave better, if you conclude with saying "but even if you do everything right and a bad situation still happens, people will still treat you badly for it".FrankJones wrote: ↑14 August 2026, 17:29I perceive the issue is the OP coming across as unsympathetic because of the wording of the original post. "I had to get an penlty on quite a number of occasions in the last yesr."
[Quite a number of occasions? So, this is not just a once-in-a-blue-moon emergency. The OP has this happen a lot, which is not normal. The onus is on the OP to take the obvious solution to the problem. ]
Yup, if they've got a single issue or two, no big deal, but if there is a pattern (or forum posts) showing they don't respect others, then why should I be expected to cater to them?FrankJones wrote: ↑15 August 2026, 08:34 My guess is that people look at the OP's profile and see a lot of forfeits and clock violations, and thus are disinclined to grant leniency, perhaps deciding that the OP is choosing to make the same mistakes over and over and expecting a different result, while inconveniencing other players and expecting leniency in return.
