I play mostly turn-based games, except with friends, so I come with a different perspective.

I hate that any one person in a multi-player game can kick another player and ruin the game for everyone. This just happened to me in two 4-player games in a row. The first was not that far along but the second was on turn 13 of 14. I would have much preferred to wait a day or two to see if the late player would take his turn rather than aborting the game. With turn-based, it's not like I'm sitting there staring at the screen, anyway.
To me, the ideal rule would be to require the majority of players to agree before a player is booted with an eventual hard time-out based on the game speed that would automatically boot the player.

I think I try to be patient if someone seems to be active, or is fairly new (i.e less than 100 ELO) If they go offline and I can see that I give them time too, because annoying internet problems happen sometimes. However if someone is taking ages over every turn and going well into the red then I also don't feel bad about pressing the button, especially if they are high level or using the extra time to plan elaborate moves.
