Re: Unfair play?

At first I expected this to be a rant on luck.
I think your initial instinct was correct.
It clearly is somewhat of a big deal, come on!
Such a big deal that we are willing to change the dynamics of the game...right?
I really don't get this weird defense of a clearly unsportmanship behaviour.
Yes, this is the real issue...These people instead also must violate the spirit of camaraderie the game itself provides. Why not just shake your head and move on...Don't allow it to influence the game...don't take it out on the game!

The Topic of this thread tells me one thing; "Unfair play" - Unfair because he didn't think of it first! You don't lambast a fellow player just because you've been got...I consider this to be unsportmanship behaviour.
no need to ignore legitimate concerns with ridicule
Yah, Okay. Never mind this post being founded on ridicule.
Why are gamers more insecure about how others play their games than those involved in other hobbies?
Simple Fact. Do you understand the Question?

I'd rather play with slywww2020, than somebody who doesn't Salute (gg) at the end of the game...or somebody who uses the timer as a tool to win.

Points have nothing to do with the game! Points are useless and mean absolutely nothing. Points are for showing off...bragging rights.

You quote left and right, but missed the one post that actually concerns how the player base can de wrongly affected.

Please go ahead and give us your candid view on this comment I posted at the beginning in fact:

""I would even go further as to banning that user.
Think of all the folks who wanted to try this m44 for the first time, or any other game that genious sets his traps up... and finding such a welcome.
Disgraceful.""

Creators made this:
Play the game, and win - you get more (ranking) points. Lose the game - you lose those points.

So you suggest we should ignore wining points, but still care about winning the game, or
you suggest ignoring wining the game and points, and just play the game not worrying about wining?

This thread (Headliner) concerns me. I am fully aware of how this one thread can wrongly infect the game.
"I would even go further as to banning that user.
Under what authority? Bad sportsmanship?? Were any rules broken???
Yeah, let's ban all the Rushskies while we're at it!
Think of all the folks who wanted to try this m44 for the first time, or any other game that genious sets his traps up... and finding such a welcome.
That's the nature of the game...eliminate women and children first (seriously)!
That "strategy" has granted him so far: 96 Games • 90 Victories • 94% wins, making him the 1st in the rank in just 3 days.
I consider that as unfair play, he doesn't deserve to be the 1st in the rank.
Winning Strategy nonetheless. Kudos to him.
Creators made this:

BGA invented this, it has nothing to do with the game. Why screw with the mechanics of the game...mess with your rank/point system - Leave the game alone!
So you suggest we should ignore wining points, but still care about winning the game, or
you suggest ignoring wining the game and points, and just play the game not worrying about wining?
I'm saying; worry about playing the best game possible...Winning isn't everything (ever watch the movie; Tin Cup?).
This is a War game. I understand this thread, to be along the lines of a tattletale. Cheat, Cheat! unfair, unfair!! he stole my points!!! Never mind the fact that he'd do the exact same thing given a chance...I'm talking about taking advantage of any given situation when the opportunity arises. I can live with it, doesn't mean I'll ever use it.

What? Ok, seriously... what the H is wrong with you?
Where did that come from...
Now I know for certain that you're trolling.
That's enough of this thread for me.

My final word... ban em both, and be done with it.
Might even be the same account, that might be against the rules!

If you can't stand the heat get out of the kitchen!

I am thinking about the first time players. Don't you think it is better to have it out there in the open as oppose to having some unsuspecting Sod create a game for the first time...unbeknownst to him that his only choices are unbalanced (non-paying customer) Scenario's. He sets up a game and is automatically going to get slagged because he inadvertently set up a one-way Scenario. and the crazy thing about it is He would be unjustly ridiculed, regardless of him winning or losing all the while playing the side that was at a disadvantage!

This happened to me. If I play a one-sided Scenario, I will usually tell the person before the match and I will take for myself the side that is known to be at a disadvantage...I get slagged anyway. Even when I don't fault him for running out of time during the entire match. You just can't win with some people! Am I going to stop playing one Sided match - No! Why give in to these sore losers???
The balance issue is not a real one
Agreed.
scenario should always be played two ways anyway.
How'd you come up with that?  In the name of fairness - you're talking pitched Battles! You've allowed a bunch of crybabies to influence your understanding of this [non] issue.

I don't have the time nor am I articulate enough to possibly explain (to your understanding) why one-sided play should not be messed with...Nor should one sided play be frowned upon.

@Tisaac:
If I can prove that everybody loves playing one-sided Scenarios (even the unbalanced ones), would you leave it alone?
PaskinsP:
In fact, I wouldn't even consider playing m44 only one way.
Are you sure about that?

I do think that a player who ONLY plays the winning side of a scenario is a bad sport and should not be ranked as the #1 player in Memoir 44 as the game is meant to be played as both sides, my quick term solution is avoid 1 sided games

Again, that's your opinion, we got it, no need to discuss it further.
I'm not sure what you're saying?

Please do not mess with the Scenario's.  Take it out on the poor sport or adjust the point value...anything but the Scenarios and one-way play.

If you take a look, you will see that the author of this thread and those people who talk as though they have a genuine interest in this game...in fact don't! they have only played 4 Battles, really!

M44 provides unbalanced Scenarios for a reason. Believe it or not - Some players enjoy one-way play, AKA unbalanced scenarios...if you're not there you are missing the spirit of camaraderie the game itself provides...you become the poor sport now!  I would guess 80% of players who engage in a "friendly" game of M44 do so with points in mind. If you take points away from some of the Scenarios that the game provides, those displaced scenarios will never get played.

You're going to have cheaters and Crybabies in every game. Changing the rules rather than playing within them is going to have a negative effect.
M44 provides unbalanced Scenarios for a reason.
I'll explain, even though most of you don't care...you seem to only care about points.

When you come across a Scenario that you see as being unbalanced - first instinct is - I don't want to play it.  Let's say you come across a [legit] pro player...top of the Legue. He tells you that you must beat him in a Scenario (one-way) of his choosing before he will play your Scenario (a Scenario of your choosing). Are you going to play him (So much for your stance on one-way play)? So, you play him one game and you lose; you play him two, three, four, 12 games and you lose every time. Now you are convinced that he set you up, as he continually gave you the losing (obvious unbalanced) side. SO, you cry whine and scream...He gives in and decides to switch sides...he is now playing the losing side. remember that this Scenario is totally unbalanced 12 to 0, right!

He wins, you get your B*tt kicked, he wins again, and again, he wins a few more times. How many games are you going to play before putting your head between your legs while walking off, never to play the game again??? Or are you going to offer to (switch sides) take the "losing' side once again, with the hope of learning something?

I've taken an interest in playing the losing side on many unbalanced Scenario, one such scenario: Japanese, 36% win while Americans 74% win (out of 1700 games played). I played it so much (over 100 games); the Japanese ended up 39% win. Most all  M44 players play the Japanese differently than any other nation. Some (two that I can remember) of my opponents took note. Most players didn't see or learn a thing, they simply took it as dice being the main contributing factor dealing with my repeated victory. Some players wouldn't play against me, in that scenario anymore.

You will not learn unless you put yourself out there. This game takes more than meets the eye. Get involved. Don't get in the habit of turning Down one-way play, you're giving it a bad name (Already happening). The player base needs A shift to thinking about one-way scenarios for mastery rather than measurement/points.

When An Honest player picks the losing side of a one-way Battle and gets flack for not giving his opponent a chance "to play the losing side (?? really), something Seriously wrong...Come on!

Let me ask you this; What do you think about a player that only plays two scenarios, only the side in which he has a *disadvantage, and only 1 way, and wins 94% of his games?

Answer: Cheater, CHEATER!!!
That "cheating strategy"
'Cheating' Can Be an Effective [Learning] Strategy? evidently, you've never heard of the "Kobayashi Maru" ;)

Let's make this very, very easy.

Each and every point you comment on in your short story... all, and I mean ALL can be experienced with 2-way play as well.

What's your issue with playing 2 ways??
It's such great fun.... in fact double fun than 1-way!
Because you play twice! What's not to like there?

(Full disclosure, i'm currently ranked top 10 ELO, and without any dirty 1-way tricks, so don't through childish arguments at me, as if we simply were not up to the challenge here)

2 way, is not the issue here. In fact, 1 way is not really the issue either. This post is simply somebody who lost a game (fair and square) and wants to give 1 way play a bad name! Putting one way on the chopping block, as it were - in order to exclude Select Scenarios from the game. Desiring to Change the nature of the game because he wasn't paying attention.
Each and every point you comment on in your short story... all, and I mean ALL can be experienced with 2-way play as well.
If you think that then you miss the point entirely.
Full disclosure, i'm currently ranked top 10 ELO,
who are you talking too?  who are you trying to convince?
I really don't get this weird defense of a clearly unsportmanship behaviour.
Your right, you still don't get it.
so don't through childish arguments at me, as if we simply were not up to the challenge here
What is your line of thinking?  Do you have any Idea of what we're talking about???

this weird defense of a clearly unsportmanship behavior.
would you agree this is more to the point? We should be talking about Un-sportsmanship behavior, right? SO, is what you're saying; It is not the way in which some people choose to play the game that is at fault here...it's the 1-way play that is the culprit.'  Now, do you finally understand this "weird defense" - not for un-sportsmanship, but rather defending - one-way play? If you've been involved with War games, or games in general you would know how to deal with a poor sport (AKA sore loser)!
ALL can be experienced with 2-way play as well.
Not entirely. If you believe that then you need play more M44.

I take interest in 1 way play AKA unbalanced scenarios...and come on, most players dread (not fun) playing the losing side of any Battle, come on! Many a day I only have an hour or less of playtime. I only play real-time (that's the way M44 is to be played, I say get rid of daily turn play ;-P).

(1-way)
When I choose a Scenario, I will usually choose one of the unbalance scenarios (trying to master). If I decide to engage, in one of the many unbalanced scenarios, I will always offer my opponent the winning side (or maybe random...if they don't know the Scenario...eliminating any thought of "dirty 1-way tricks).

When you've played as many m44 games (War games) as I have you get bored with winning and the whiners. I take more interest in learning. Even if you think you're a pro and you have learned as much as your gonna, you will find there is always more to be learned. Think outside the Box. GO at it from a different direction.

When you talk about taking 1way play out of the picture you are talking about disregarding (taking out) unbalanced scenarios.
Don't go into a game thinking you're playing the losing side of an unbalanced scenario...It could have been deigned that way for a reason.
