You do not engage with anyone trolling or insulting you directly. It:
- keeps public space clean for all users, as offensive language/trolling is limited to one post, there is no long string of fighting, no dragging in others, no taking sides...
- organically curbs trolls, as a lot of them won't keep going if what they are writing is ignored. Some might even not start at all, as they know they'll be ignored and reported. Yes, it works.
- makes moderation easier as there is no need to plow through endless arguments "they said - but they said - but they said it first". If you engage, you are fighting publicly, which is prohibited, so you're breaking the rules.
- there is more to achieve by going directly to moderators, than by engaging. What result you expect when you tell someone they are doing something bad? They already know, they already don't care, and you're just venting your frustrations (for everyone to see, and others may not want to see it, too) without achieveling anything? No one will change their behavior because some rando online said "I don't like what you're doing". It's harder to ignore moderation. So, engaging is also pointless.

So. Yes. Do not engage. You'll achieve the same nothing as with doing nothing, but you won't add to making things uncomfortable for others.
In my first moderation I didn’t even talk to the troll. I told another user to not pay any attention to all the trolls negative comments.

My last two came from a co op game. How do you not “engage” w/ someone you are playing a team game w/ that ask you a question? Lol

As far as it keeps moderation easy. Shouldn’t the moderators at the bare minimum moderate both parties? How can they do an investigation, see negative comments/actions directed at you, and just ignore it because you didn’t file the report? If their job is to keep this a “safe” place then shouldn’t they be moderating these aggressors also? Actually a strong penalty. If you challenge a moderation and are found to be guilty you get a stronger punishment. But if you are clearly guilty but file a report first for someone reacting to you being guilty you get a pat on the back.

Green thumbs like red thumbs in my opinion should be earned. You need to green thumb 5 ppl to red thumb someone. You also have had to play w/ them recently. So I know ppl are giving random ppl green thumbs just so they can red thumb ppl. Just because you played w/ someone once and they didn’t call you a bleep doesn’t necessarily mean they are a person who should be green thumbed. In fact the last time I went to give ppl green thumbs two of the accounts had a page full of comments of how awful they are.
You haven't answered my question at all. There are 2 kinds of red thumbs, private and public. Are both limited by amount of green thumbs?
They are functionally different. Private red thumbs only adds them to a personal blacklist. Public red thumbs can have an impact on their karma, which in turn limits their social functions.
Still my question is not answered. Maybe something got lost in translation here. :D

I am fully aware about the functionality of private and public red thumbs. I often read in the past and in the current thread that the amount of red thumbs you can give out to others is limited by the amount of green thumbs you give out. So, my question: Is it
A) only the number of public red thumbs is limited by the number of green thumbs, or
B) the overall number of red thumbs (both public ones and private ones added together) is limited by the number of green thumbs?

Naively, version A makes a lot more sense to me, but maybe for some reason, version B is implemented?

Thank you GTSchemer, Meeplelowda, and Chiffa of Kettari. You express the policy here well.
ChiefPointThief wrote: 05 August 2023, 15:54 I’ve been moderated 3x on this site. I wasn’t the aggressor in any of these situations. I am not questioning my moderations. I already received my punishments.

The last one I was playing hanabi. My teammate had a disagreement about my clue and called me a problem after a few comments about how poorly I play. Then they tried to get everyone to concede. I declined and said “quit”. They then proceeded to throw the game by throwing away all their clued cards and not cluing anyone. In response to this I said “it looks like you are the problem”. These two things are what got me moderated.

Why is there no option to report clear cheaters as well? You can’t public red thumb clear cheaters but if someone sends me 5 messages saying I’m a terrible player and I respond saying you are being a sore loser that is enough for moderation?
This post is questioning in fact the moderations you received and as such is in violation of our policy. This is not appropriate on the Forums and you have been warned before about misusing the Forums.
sourisdudesert wrote: 18 August 2022, 09:56 The most important thing to know is this: it is totally useless. The reasons:
  • The Forums are a place where players can help each other; however, other players are not capable of doing anything for you concerning moderations.
  • There is already a clear procedure to appeal in your moderation (see below).
Quoting the lines from a moderation against you is clearly no longer a general conversation, but rather a personalised appeal on the moderation. Since you have included lines from the moderation report in your post, I feel it only fair to also mention what penalty you received, as the tone of these quotes is to make the moderation appear unfair towards you by referring to the "punishment." The moderation for this chat (including but not limited to the lines you have quoted here) verdict was as follows:
Moderation Report:
Give a simple warning (no penalty): Aggressive behaviour on [Table]. Even if you have been provoked, this behaviour is not tolerated on BGA. This is a warning.
ChiefPointThief wrote: They tried to force me to concede I said no but you can quit. Where is the crime? If that is against the rules then disable the chat as a whole.
Telling the other player you do not wish to abandon is not a punishable offence. Merely stating this will not cause any moderation penalties, and you have been found not guilty (and thus received no report from our side) for other tables where this was the limit of your response. Please refer to the entire conversation when considering if the moderation against you was justified. This was not the full extent of your interaction and also did not cause you a penalty.
ChiefPointThief wrote: You can’t say anything back to cheaters while they are insulting you as well. Just sit there and do nothing.

Of course you can do something. If a player is insulting you, you can (and should) file a moderation report against them and mark all of the offensive lines from the chat for the moderators to review.
The moderators are volunteers. It is not their job. If you do not feel offended enough to report someones comments against you in a chat or a Forum, the moderators are not going to file a report on your behalf. It is not their responsibility to do so.

Yes, this is what is meant.
