That is already the case. But you want your own definition of "start to play normally". The site definition of "start to play normally" is keeping the timer positive. A BGA timer of +X per turn does not mean you have to play every turn within X, it means that X is added to your time bank every turn, and you can manage it however you like.

Suppose a turn-based game, with 1 turn per day, 3 days max time. If a player goes down to -20 h and plays, next turn they'll be at +4 hours and cannot be expelled. If they play within those 4 hours, they'll have more than 1 day for the next turn. If they go more than 1 day into the the negative, it means that they have been 3 days too slow, because they have used the whole 3 day time bank, so yes, there's a harsher penalty of being vulnerable for more than one turn.

The issue is more likely to arise in fast turn based, I would think.

A player has some emergency come up and misses the entire 12 hour window. Let's say it's fast turn based 8 moves per day. Asa result, the clock becomes negative. Depending on the duration of the emergency, the player might have the timer become - 6 hours, or something like that.

The player could then make 4 moves instantly upon returning, yet still be in the negative.

This would only happen in one of two cases:

1) The player carelessly allowed to clock to get close to 0:00 at some point, such that any unexpected situation could result in going multiple moves into the negative.

2) The player is making moves immediately but then has a multi-day emergency.

The first scenario can be avoided by making moves quickly during the clock period in a fast-turn-based game.

Really it comes down to individual assessments of what constitutes good sportsmanship. Personally, if I saw a player return from negative clock and making an obvious effort to move immediately in an attempt to get the clock positive again, I would recognize the effort (especially in light of a possible emergency that may have caused the problem in the first place) and thank the player for getting back to positive.

If someone became negative on clock and then seemingly made little effort to become positive again, I would probably send an in-game message asking what the issue is.

If I became negative myself (This has not happened yet), as soon as I returned, I would message my opponent giving an explanation and asking not to be expelled while I quickly get back to positive.

Ok,good, but most players are more casual, and don't think of all of that.

True, but in a way, that is a casual approach I described. Ultra-competitive would be to just expel people. I have one opponent currently who has gone into negative 3 times and is not doing much to avoid it. I asked if everything is okay. No reply. I might end up losing the game. But I can't bring myself to expel the player. It just wouldn't feel right to me.

Slow play in- non-tournament turnbased games doesn't really bother me - I just make moves in other games.
