Playing games is for enjoyment, making friends, and friendly interaction. For someone to arrogantly criticise others, thinking himself clever, is truly foolish. To believe Splendor is a chess-like game devoid of luck is even more foolish. My post aims to spark discussion; Of course, others may disagree with my views. Yet self-important arrogance only invites sniggers and contemptuous laughter. Some highly ranked Splendor masters are friends of mine, and they wouldn't be foolish enough to dismiss my views as entirely without merit.

It is gratifying to see others engaging in such interesting discussions on this topic, that is what truly constitutes engaging discourse.

Anyway, enjoy the game~~

Interesting topic.
My 1st thought of this is: If we can't defend, then attack, be on our own mission and let him tear up between still going for that hidden hold or defend us, which he now has 1 less space to hold defend. If there's no good card to attack, then hold a blind for ourself.
2nd thought: If all open card is bad and his hidden hold is good, then it's not the matter of skill anymore, let's call it good game and replay. Luck is part of the fun that makes losing not feeling too bad like in chess. I mean, in chess, when you lose, you're sore loser, while in Splendor, when you lose, it's not as sore.
If you forbid the luck-base, you're making it heavier to the loser.
Or you can play a less luck-base game, say, Ark Nova?

This is funny Frank. Indeed he can't cease to be an persistent keyboard warrior/tr@11. Because..after all... he's ceaseless.

To the original poster's banning blind draw is just ranting right?? That is a fundamental mechanic of the game by Marc André. Players are open to blind drawing tier 1 and 2 cards so why would there be a selective ban on tier 3?? I admit there's part of the game I also hate, such as the 7-8 chips 1 point tier 2 cards, the 12 chips 4 point cards....way more chips required than the value of the cards. And I despise the nobles and players who noble-chase. But again, the same toxicity that makes Splendor a pain is what keeps players addicted to it. Cheers.
