Was definitely shocked to see a pop up ad on the homepage. Came here to see if this was an accident or sanctioned new way of advertising. Hopefully it is just an accident.

This. In real life whenever I tell people about this site, often they will be like "wow, can you make money from your achievements?" Huh, no? That's not why I play games.

Like, is this really the first thing that comes to mind to people? I don't think the idea would even occur to me in the reverse situation, I'd just be impressed and glad for them.

Not good to have ads. Especially bad to have Them as premium. Unacceptable for them to be for predatory companies like gambling. And lets face it, most internet ads will be teetering on the edge of legitimate at best.

I understand as a company, they want to maximize profits. Premium accounts likely generate a lot. Hopefully they can review other options that are not detracting from the bga experience.

I got the ad (Android; Chrome browser). I immediately wondered if it was a bug, and came here to see if the forum had blown up.

Predictably it has. And equally predictably when something breaks on the weekend or at 3 am CET, there are people losing their minds that it hasn't been fixed within 10 minutes.

People are leaping to the conclusion that this is intentional. Now if this isn't a mistake or a bug, it is one of the few things that would cause me to cancel my subscription. But give them some time to make an official statement.

People keep acting like being acquired by Asmodee means they somehow have carte blanche access to all of Asmodee's resources. As I said in another thread, Asmodee's most recent annual report is almost 200 pages long and BGA is mentioned twice. I've also seen no indication that Asmodee cleaned out the C-suite at BGA and installed its own management after the acquisition.

I added css for my profile that seems to have made it stop popping up every time the page reloads. It's not an actual fix - just hides the nuisance for me for the time being. I don't know if it will cause any issues with any games or other site features (I vaguely remember bug reporting doesn't work at all if there's any custom css), so use at your own risk...

Code: Select all

.card { display:none }

I have not seen any of these ads. I really doubt this is anything BGA is doing.

Oh my god, the price of something has gone up over the years?

That's crazy, what with the price of groceries, housing, etc, remaining constant.

I mean, wow, the price of a membership has skyrocketed to the stratospheric price of ... $42 a year?

We are investigating on this because those ads are definitively not ours. We will keep everyone posted.

We are currently investigating a security incident affecting Board Game Arena.

Some users may have encountered unexpected pop-ups while using the platform. We have identified unauthorized code involved in this behaviour, and our technical team is actively investigating its origin, scope and potential impact.

At this stage, the investigation is still ongoing. We do not yet have enough verified information to provide further details, and we want to avoid speculating before the technical analysis is complete.

We can confirm that payment card information was not exposed through this incident, as Board Game Arena does not store users’ payment card details on its systems.

If you encounter any unexpected pop-up or unusual behaviour on Board Game Arena, we recommend closing it without interacting with it and refreshing the page.

We will update this post as soon as we have confirmed information to share https://bga.li/3K2J.

Thank you for your patience and understanding while our team investigates.
