UGH, another 4+ months of this? I guess it's indefinitely true if the guru base has been sufficiently "captured" by 3P fans. It seems that all it takes for any BGA Arena game is for fans of a less-popular configuration to get control one (1) time, after which they can hold it forever.

How would they get control of it one time if the other side is presently holding it forever?

That's an excellent point.
3-player arena seems less popular than 2-player, yet, at some point recently, the guru voting changed it from 2-player to 3-player.
Does anyone know how close the final vote was?

By getting enough people to
mix it up one time to see how it goes. There is little to nothing unknown or exotic about 2P play. True believers vote yes, why-nots vote yes, it passes. Why-nots opt out of play, only true believers remain. Just a plausible scenario.

I suppose it’s not possible to have 2- and 3-player arenas separately, or to have one arena that accommodates both 2- and 3-player games?

Guru status is not based on just arena play. It is based on total number of games in any competitive setting. Which means ELO based.
Seeing as 3 player games take longer, the only way it can be captured is if 3-player people play more games and invest more time.

I personally only play Arena, and thus haven't played Wingspan since it went 3P. 3P people are playing
infinitely more games than me.

I'm starting to legitimately wonder if this change was a result of BGA putting their thumb on the scale to have fewer games and take the heat off of their servers.
It does feel (unscientifically, just the feel of playing lately) that the servers have been more stable since I stopped playing Wingspan Arena. I still miss it terribly, though.
This season is trending towards a similar number of games as last season, quite a bit fewer than previous ones.
