Thumbs reset after a long period of inactivity

Post by Yorgad »

Hey everyone,

A simple idea :
What about resetting thumbs from long-term inactive players ? (e.g. after one year of inactivity  red thumbs from that player won't count in our reputation anymore).
This would help eliminate spurious and improve reputation accuracy without challenging the existing system...

Comments and suggestions welcome !

+1

I used a lot of red thumbs in my early days on here when there was no personal note section. In the meantime the system has changed a lot and I can’t even use red thumbs due to the 5:1 ratio. I’d rather have all my given thumbs deleted then not being able to use red thumbs at all...

How does only getting rid of red thumbs make it more accurate? Being inactive for a long period does not automatically mean when someone with a high percentage of red thumbs returns, their behavior will have improved, so you can't assume the red thumbs somehow don't count anymore. (You're building in an "improvement" assumption.)

If the idea is to give someone a "fresh start" (which is not the same as being "more accurate") then it seems all the thumbs should go away so they truly have a fresh start. Only getting rid of red thumbs is more like getting a fresh start with an advantage over new players, one they should not have. We don't know how new players will behave either, but someone who once had a lot of red thumbs is at least some indication of what they once were like, with no indication of whether they will change or not.

A fresh start means a fresh start, like dump all of it. I'm not sure what I think of the idea of dumping thumbs at all, but if it were done, it seems dumping all of them would be more appropriate, to make it like they are new.

the whole point of a reputation system is to track bad behaviour. a one-year expiry is way too lenient, whether you are giving too many red thumbs, or receiving too many red thumbs.

if you play sufficient games without problems, your reputation is bound to improve over time.

if you have given too many red thumbs that you can't give any more, it may be time to have a look in the mirror.
