Revealing secret info in chat

Hello.

I am still new here and I am just wondering how common it is for people to reveal secret game info via the in game chat system.

In one of my turn-based games of Saboteur I came back to the table to find that one of the players had announced that the top treasure card was coal. This is information that is gained by playing one of the special cards in the game and this info and the role you are playing is supposed to be secret. This revelation makes the game far less interesting to me and I do not think it should be happening like this. It certainly would not be in real life.

If this is the norm, then I will just have to avoid playing games with secret info.

I think in sabateur part of the game is about revealing information strategically. Perhaps that player was lying, trying to influence other players or to deter players from going toward it. It's secret info, but what is done with that info is part of the game.

Saboteur is a game where you can reveal some information without break the game.

If you ask to people to not reveal some information, sometimes people will do it.
But when you play with people who want reveal some information and people who doesn't want, if you say nothing, the people who want to reveal some information will just do it. So you need to ask before.

It doesn't say in the rules that you can't talk about what you saw. There are only two things are you must keep secret. Your role is not revealed until the end of the round, and your nugget cards are kept secret until the end of the game. But, as has been pointed out, the person who chatted about what they saw may be lying...

The rules say that when you use a map "HE" now know what is there, not that the table now knows what is there.

Since giving this info out totally ruins the game for me I will just not play it here.

The Saboteur is a bluffing game. You can reveal information and you can lie to deceive your opponents. That's the spirit of this game. It seems that you just don't know how to play Sab.

With games like Love Letter, Hanabi, and Secret Moon, the rules explicitly state that you are not supposed to reveal secret information to other players. Players who reveal this information are breaking the rules, and I would recommend giving them a red thumb and not playing with them anymore.

Saboteur is different because technically, you are allowed to reveal secret information, but bluffing is a huge strategy that many players utilize, so you have to decide who you can trust. I don't play Saboteur on here because there's too many people chatting at once and it's hard to keep track of everything. However, Saboteur is extremely fun to play in person.

I own and know the game quite well. Even the creator has stated on BGG that his preference is for people to not share that info, although it is not technically against the rules.
