I was wondering if it would be possible to implement an alternative to the balanced variant in Puerto Rico. At the world championships the game is usually played as standard but with a bid (in half point increments) for seating position. The first player bids a number of points for a position. The next player does the same - and must bid higher if they bid for a position with an existing bid. The bidding continues as long as a player does not have the highest bid for a seat and ends when each player has a bid on a different position.
I have not played the variant much but PR does have serious turns with seating order and the balanced variant only really solves this for the two and three-player versions.
